Telkom mast sabotaged

Infrastrcture sabotage is a very real issue for Telkom, particularly in the more rural areas of the country. Take, for example, the constant theft of solar panels. Apparently some of our fellow countrymen seem to think that nailing four wooden legs to a solar panel makes a good table.

And on this issue, from an email MaD fwded me this week:

I am a lecturer at xxxxx. I have been asked to present a seminar at (international university) on information policy and I want to speak about infrastructure, particularly telecommunications in SA. Do you have any information on the frequency and extent of telephone cable theft and how many lines are impacted? Even better would be an estimate on loss in the Rand value that the theft causes? I have tried to get info from Telkom but none is forthcoming. Any ideas, suggestions on where to get this info?

Anyone with collated (or otherwise) info on the extent of telecoms infrastructure sabotage in SA, please post here or contact me via PM.
