Telkom Mobile discusses 2010 plans

If their mobile offering is anything like their ADSL lines I'll stay clear of this one.
 
i wouldn't touch telkom mobile with a barge pole, they would want to sort out there crap adsl network first
 
Due to some completely numbskull planning by complex developers, there is no trunking into our complex...so one of only a handful of choices other than adsl, and I chose telkom mobile after much deliberation. Been really great so far considering I had 4 meg adsl in my previous residence. Would I go back to adsl? sure -bandwidth costs are still rather high, but I am more disciplined in my data usage anyway now. Only slight niggle is that , 6pm every night, without fail, the speed drops significantly on the 3g connection.Other than that, the connection is speedy enough for youtube vids, 2 users browsing the net, and dloading ps3 content.

you could always get wimax from them..... i have applied and is waiting for the install now.
 
The thing that worries me about this is that Telkom might use this as a reason to further neglect their existing coper line business, with one of the big reasons for that being all the coper line theft. It's costing them millions to replace, safe guard, etc, so I can see that their eyes will become all sparkly when they think about mobile as a solution to that. So I'm afraid that they will put less and less emphasis on maintaining, expanding or upgrading their existing fixed line business and us the ADSL users will suffer in the process. However, if it could just penetrate their thick skulls that if they bring ADSL prices down and make it very competitive then so much more people would be on board with that and they could actually save the fixed line business that way. However, then it's again a case of more copper lines to protect...

I liked the comment from someone else on this forum a few days ago that fiber does not get stolen like copper and has so many huge benefits. :)
 
Just who is Telkom trying to fool ? It almost seems as if they lost touch with reality , with continued crap service they now want to venture into the cellular arena with statements like "Telkom Mobile, which will be launched in 2010, promises to give consumers better value for money" !! It pains me just reading this crap !
 
Telkom’s ‘true’ mobile launch will however only happen later this year, and Moholi said that customers can expect very competitive prices and overall value from them. “We will give better value for money in both the mobile voice and data space,” Moholi told MyBroadband.

Who'd like to bet Telkom's "value proposition" will include free or discounted on-net calls, including to Telkom land-lines?

Not clear from the article what the strategy is. Most of what's said is already old hat.
 
I won't use them simple because they've proven they couldn't give a hoot about their customers. I'd rather pay more.

... and will be prices competitively at the same price as MTN and Vodacom.

You do know that they are already cheaper than them?
 
Look I'm all for more competition, but I'm confused.

Are Telkom proposing to developer mobile voice calls, and if so how did they skip to the head of the queue?

It took years before CelC was approved as a third mobile operator... so why do Telkom get to provide these services without applying for a license?
