Telkom Mobile Giving out personal information

I RICA'ed a new telkom sim card on Friday and I took out a contract today. Telkom captured my second name as my first name which is no problem. They are how every the only company that has ever done that. Interestingly enough
I just got a phone call from Virgin mobile using my second name.

Are they allowed to just give my information out to any one. There was no place with both sim card and contract were I gave them permission to give it to a third party.

Unless a person that cold calls me tells me exactly where they found my number, I won't engage in any conversation.

Why would Telkom sell your information to their competitor?

The people involved in RICA are just selling info. they have done this for ages. Everytime I have registered a SIM within one day I get spam and phising messages.

We do we accept this? We should not. If they are giving out cellphone numbers, they could give out ID numbers too. Then next you know someone has done an illegal simswap and you are wondering why your bank account looks a little empty.

Look at your receipt from the shop you bought the simcard and see if the person's name is there who took your RICA information. Then take that info to the manager of the outlet. Take it to the police if the evidence is there. The fact Virgin Mobile got your name backwards is perhaps evidence enough of the offence. There are very strict laws governing the Protection of Personal Information.

Well until those who are aware of this take their evidence to the Hawks, Public Protector, Icasa or other investigative body, nothing will happen about this. If they do nothing, then perhaps take it to the Mail & Guardian or Nose Week for them to follow up.
