I'm moving away from my MTN/Afrihost prepaid and into a contract as my phone is on the blink. Telkom have some really compelling offers for the iPhone compared to other operators. How are they as an operator? Reliable? Service good?

The coverage is hit and miss. People often say that they can't hear me so I have to stand outside for them to hear me. Then on my wife's phone, a notification pops up that it's using our WiFi because the coverage is zilch.

Rather get a prepaid sim first and test for yourself, maybe you get lucky.

I see my area is well covered for LTE/4G and areas I travel to. I assume that in areas not covered you'd still get signal through MTN/Vodacom towers.

Where I am the coverage is quite good. Every now and then it would disconnect, but my vodacon work Sim card does the same. Maybe do what the other guy said with the prepaid Sim first and check if it works for you.

It depends very much on the area in which you live and operate.
The answer is to evaluate first before switching.
So far, after the initial problems my mom experienced with LTE phone in CT, the service is excellent now.
In my own case, I was an early adopter of Telkom mobile , have a useless sim on my account and are having real issues to cancel it and get a new one.
So Telkom support is not at all good in my opinion.
