Yesterday Telkom called to say they will be stopping my copper landline service in 30 days, and moving me to a wireless service.apparently due to copper theft.

Is this a hoax ?

Ok, well I told them to shove it , I really don’t need a landline.

Although I could do with a landline number that redirects to my cell.
Anyone know if there is a service like that in SA?

Yes the most reliable will probably be with a VOX SIP account, doesn't cost much and calls are dirt cheap on it too, they have an app that you can install on your phone to get it to work, basically they port your telkom number to a virtual one that can be used via VOIP phones or the app.

We had a Telkom line issue at my business, ported my numbers to vox and now we connect to it using MTN LTE for the data portion no physical landline involved at all.

Looks like Skype could also be an option
Edit : Skype is $6.50 pm for a local number

A while ago, in my Gran's area, they stole the copper twice, third time Telkom laid Fibre, got cut again. The idiots thought it was copper.

Now Telkom refuses to lay new cabling and only offers WirelessI solutions

Nope. Been the strategy since 2008 I believe.

In my dad's area he hasn't been able to use his landline in over 2 years. The entire neighborhood is without landlines because of numerous copper thefts. Telkom would repair it and two days later all pillaged again. After the 3rd time they gave up.
