I got a call from Telkom today about moving onto their new "next generation network" in my area. Was very vague, but for some reason they insisted on a personal appointment to discuss getting permission to make the switch. I know they're making the switch to an IP-based network country-wide, so what's the deal with requiring permission (I could've heard wrong, but that sounded like what the guy said).

Anybody else had something similar? If so, what's it all about? I hope just not an excuse to flog "convergence" packages I don't want/need.

Ask them for a reference number and contact person name/department. Then call Telkom customer support yourself to verify the details. If it's legit, there should be no problems. If it's not, you've just prevented a potential scouting visit by criminals.

I also received a call from them recently, but it was to discuss possible deployment of their LTE service on the premises.

I gather this was because I signed up for the trial in the past and then did not get selected.

Told them I was happy with the 20Mb/s ADSL service at this stage and they moved on.

If they however did not tell you exactly what they want to discuss with you and used the correct terminology, it is a red flag and you should end the call immediately. It might be a possible attempt to gain access to your property.
