hi
quick question and advise needed
we have both Vumutel and telkom in our area and way its looking on coverage map Openserve soon to be there to
which one of these should i opt for and are they quick in getting things up and running ie no or little downtime
i was hoping to then hook up with :
cool ideas for fibre
telkom land line for phone calls

thanks

Openserve is the wholesale 'Telkom' network, so if Telkom is available, any of the other ISPs on Openserve will be available.

I would choose Vumatel over Openserve, although Openserve is fine if that's all you have access to.

Cool Ideas is a great choice.

As for the landline, just port your number to a VOIP provider like Switchtel (R49/month), or Freshphone (free). You would then need a VOIP Telephone plugged into your network, or the other option is an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter). The ATA plugs into your network and has a "normal phone" jack on it allowing you to use an old style telephone.

thanks
so i can keep my existing phones and plug into a ATA
the ATA just plugs into my router im assuming?

The Openserve network is mostly aerial GPON with dome joints stuck on top of existing Telkom poles and the feeder cables routed underground (sometimes).

Vumatel on the other hand is mostly trenched Active Ethernet networks. (faster than GPON and MUCH more reliable)

Vuma also has a couple of Aerial GPON networks here and there (check for black gum poles next to the road in Gauteng).

I'd choose Vumatel any day of the week and ONLY choose Openserve if there's absolutely no other option.
