Is there anybody else with massive outages of lines? There is so little being said about this its scary. Complete towns without lines, even locally, diginet lines are down, whats going on here?? Lost coms yesterday most of the day, came back up around 23:00 last night, down again from 06:00 this morning. Contact at Telkom says they were repairing damage to cables all night only to have another damaged this morning, suspects?? Any info most welcome, pm me if you like. Having to use 3G at the moment, will check in later, feels like we've been cut off !! :p

Vandalism Suspected As Telkom Street Boxes Are Damaged

Network problems are being experienced in some parts of the country following damage to Telkom street distribution cabinets (SDCs).

SDCs are points of connections usually located on street corners to enable a service to customers.

Since 16 April 2006, 65 SDCs have been damaged, with 46 being in KZN (mainly in the greater Durban area but scattered throughout the province). Twelve SDCs have been damaged in the Pretoria, Witbank and Nelspruit areas, three in the Cape and 4 in Gauteng.

Damage mainly includes the wilful cutting of connection points to customers and the incineration of entire SDCs.

Telkom's Chief Technical Officer, Thami Msimango, said that "the nature of the damages indicates that this was the work of vandals on an orchestrated basis".

"At this stage it is unclear as to who was behind these acts of vandalism, but the investigation of these is under way," stated Msimango.

Customers are assured that the restoration of their service is our main priority and we have already restored a number of areas, added Msimango.

We've been down since Monday night in Pinetown. Telkom are unable to give me an estimated repair time therefore I'm forced to go and rent a VSAT link at a cost of 20K for 2 weeks. Apparently cables were cut and street boxes burnt down in the Pinetown area and last night cables were cut in the JHB area as well. What scare me is the fact that because of the ongoing strikes they do not have the manpower to repair all this damages.

Yeah seems we're back online for now but there is some serious congestion and lost information... How long till the next outage....

Nevermind cable breaks... our home phone line has been down for 2 weeks. They have told us they fixed it.... hmff... the voice mail is full.... We rely on our phones since we get contractual information from the government.. All i have to say is.. Cable breaks or not they should have back-ups in place to atleast make things a bikkie snappier...
