This is a statement of monopoly and I hope the Competition Commission picks up on this.

visibly evident on www.ispmap.org.za imho as well as other places. (people here seem to be very lazy at finding info)

Wrong! IS may have a bigger IP infrastructure (which I am not so sure about) BUT the fact remains that this network is based on fixed line services offered by Telkom exclusively.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because an ISP claims to have this or that; that they not using Telkom infrastructure.

Well if you use the fact that Telkom also uses Telkom for their fixed lines, IS is bigger (much) than SAIX (Telkom Internet). Dont confuse the PSTN network (which infact does not belong to telkom but they are the only ones licenced to operate it) with the IP network - Telkom are claiming they "own the data network", but seeing as IS pay lots of money for their IP network one assumes they do infact own it. And it is much bigger

Blocks and lines, yes and doesnt IS look like it has alot more blocks and lines than Telkom? Not so, nothing very concrete to go on though, but thats the best I can give someone from this site.

Sorry dude - I think you are confused....

I am sure you mean IS has more IP capacity..

Huh - well who owns it then...

Face it THEY DO!

???? Not logical ???? Just because I spend a lot of money on my co-located hosting equipment does not mean I own the datacenter...

quote:
And it is much bigger

.... and .......than what?

At the end of the day telkom is controlling what goes were on they network , and enything that goes from IS goes threw telkom couse if they didnt that would be illieagle , so thats the bottom line .

Look at it this way.
IS claim to have the most Bandwidth at over 300mb.
Telkom own 30% of SAT cable, currently 20GB of bandwidth which gives telkom close on 7gb of bandwidth(IS therefore is WRONG)
Telkom owns everything up to the international line
IS are able to own their own international bandwidth, seperate to telkom but have to use tekoms local data connectivity.

So the way I see it is Telkom owns the local Data network and 30% of the international network.

I dont think I have posted something this deep before...could be way off.[:D]

Telkom says local is lekker 'cause they own all of it (part of their monopoly licence), so that part I agree with.
IS have several options for international: use Telkom SAT cables or buy into their own share, use Telkom partially owned satellite or use somebody else's. To say Telkom own 30% of (all) the international network is not true.

According to my research Telkom owns 30% of the bandwidth supplied by the SAT-3 Cable, currently capable of 20Gb, eventually capable of 120GB, maybe more. I posted somewhere else about telkom and the sat 3 cable...see below.

Some interesting posts

I just wanted to point out that Telkom's statement on its
website is a statement of : "We are a monopoly".

Further than the statement they go on to say that because
they monopolise the "data network" they are the best choice.

This ought to get them into big trouble with the Competition Act,
which was signed by Thabo Mbeki.
