"Samuels adds that if IPTV is to be launched as a fully-fledged service, it is likely that Internet service providers' capping policies require review."

Right now we must blame the ISP's for capping...
Besides I wonder who they think will be able to afford triple play. Telscum have to be stopped, this is getting sooo rediculous, it's starting become quite funny, and I get tottaly embaressed for their part. Shame man, I wonder how these peanuts will feel when the cat's finally let out the bag, and they are exposed to the general public for the idiots they are.

This is exactly why Telkom changed to a per-gig billing system last year. Read the quote carefully: Telkom is blaming the ISPs for the pathetic monthly cap, and not themselves. Poor old ISPs get passed the buck...

I think that Telkom should be treated like Telkom treats everybody else. Thus its plans for interactive TV etc should be scuppered immediately because it does not have a broadcast license. It does not matter what medium is used as was suggested in the ICASA-DONTPANICTV case, it is still broadcasting. So start lodging your complaints now-TELKOM has not got a broadcasting license

Would they need a broadcast license though? Websites don't need a license to stream video off their sites do they?

I really dont mind their current speeds... its the UPTIME that blows chunks! .... ADSL only works 90% of the time.. the rest is a high speed connection to /dev/null

Muhaha

No point to having more bandwidth speed if ur sitting a 2gig account, which you'll use up in a flash, yay...............

Exactly!

If they're saying the ADSL draft is unconsitutional b/c they can't recoup the costs, how the heck can they get away with just "moving" the exchanges and introducing newer exchanges for triple-play on their current budget. Don't they need billions more (according to Telkom logic) to afford it?...or will the so called million users they're aiming for pay for it?
Follow that logic if you would.

And what about having to upgrade all the DSLAMs etc to ADSL2+ and VDSL? If they're moaning about not having the money now, how can they fork out the money for upgrading??

So..... I want triple play......
I place my order and get a delivery date of say, 1 month. I phone and start cancelling all contracts that might overlap, my Satellite TV subscription, I cancell my landline and my current internet connection. In one months time I would most likely sit with a mobile phone in my very quiet TV room trying to find out the score of the Bok game and having to wait untill Monday to send an e-mail from work to anyone overseas. 2 Months later I sign up with the usuals again. Bottom line is that Telkom will never be able to maintain a level of customer satisfaction and service, their track record shows this.

mmmm let me quess that will not mean a price decrease in 192 kbs or the other accounts, or the abolishment of those crappy accounts, but only the select few that can afford it will get it, not like the rest of world where they do not even know that you go (bigger NOT smaller faster NOT slower), hey that made me think of something ...... smallll .... the cap

Well that is my penny worth

I cannot believe that Telkom expect us to believe such bull. It is less than 4 months since they placed that burden on to the ISP's, after several years of imposing it themselves. I know they are arrogant, I know that they think that they are (above) the law, but this is the dirtiest and meanest spin I have ever seen them try. The fact that they hide it, in the middle of what should be good news, is even worse. The message they are putting across to the public is "we want to give you this, but, the evil ISP's are too money grabbing to let us."
My first impression of Samuels was that of an honest technocrat, I now place him lower than Steve White. Spit.

hrm so they saying they gonna up speeds.. BUT only for iptv/triple play.

Never mind a broadcast license for Telkom, what about having to pay for a TV license for your new computer?

If Telkom want IPTV, then they have to 1) Kill capping, 2) stop 24hr Resets 3) Get a better uptime rate

Don't forget the most important part 4) Lower Total Cost, and for us gamers 5) Abolish Port Priotisation and Shaping.

I long for the day when Telkom wakes up to what the whole world already knows, Business are good stable revenue, but residential clients adds the numbers and applications like Games drives the industry forward! There will always be more residential clients than there are businesses, and guess who takes advantage of the precious value added content major telcos around the world offer? That's right, residential clients. Business needs are specific and to some extent finite. Residential clients in the long-term has lead to the massive growth of the Internet since the early 1990's. Telkom should stop aiming for short-term profits and look at the larger picture. I hope the SNO has better business sence than Telkom.

I know it's late, but I just finished a MMO session and am still a bit hyped, but are my eyes deceiving me? Did I actually read in the article that Telkom ADMITS more bandwidth will be required for tripple-play services? THAT's what we've saying all along, Telkom. Shame on you for not listening to your bread-and-butter clients sooner and now you're trying to spin that it's your idea to finally improve service delivery!? Man, if this tactic actually works, I've got a good mind to go to Microsoft and tell them I think it's time they brought out a commercial 64-bit OS and demand that they pay me for the idea LOL

Not worried about the speed Telkom.

Can you say COST?

Indeed! That is the question in the end. They can offer us what we want, but who can affort it?

How can they get away with this?

Samuels also confirms Telkom will appoint contractors to assist in shortening the loop-link, which stands at an average of 5.5km, compared to an international average of between 1.5 and 2km.

HOw can they be allowed to retrench staff then outsource all these services? The depatment of Labor should be taken to book over lack of action on this. Where are the unions on this issue? Any takers?
