Telkom: Please Read.

I'm pretty sure everyone in this forum knows what the prices are overseas. Everyone knows our prices are too high. But comparing them to the UK is just stupid.
And somebody feeling the need to show us prices overseas every week in a new thread is getting a bit old

This "official opposition" thing you have against most threads is also getting a bit old.

Also keep in mind that occasional visitors will only read the newest threads and might not know what the prices are overseas...

Where is this third world country you are talking about?
Although at times, I am tempted to call our fixed-line telecoms 3rd world

RolandD : Official Opposition? nice :-) I dislike it when companies, etc are talked about badly because of misinformed views. So I do normally get involved.

Pretty much the only time I always disagree is with Ajax and Craigsa. And even there sometimes I do agree with him

Our South Africa is a third world country - if you think not its time to start waking up and get the head out of the sand.

South Africa is a first world country according to the CIA world factbook. There is some dispute about this however (From the UN notably). SA is a first world country with aspects of a third world country. But we are getting off topic

We are a third world country in the world, but we are most definetly a first world country in africa... so if we could only pull our heads out of Telkoms a$$, we could lead the way for the rest of this continent.

South Africa will be a third world country as long as people do not open their eyes, see the truth and start doing something about all the problems.
Going on and defending South Africa as a first world country just shows lack of international exposure - I travel extensivly and believe me, we are a real third world country and its not getting better.

Why should our prices not be on par with the UKs ? Does it cost more to import DSL equipment to SA? Does it cost more to run a copper network here for some reason?
Granted they have a larger customer base, but our major telecom has twice the profit margin that theirs does. Perhaps thats the question that should be asked.

For starters ... Londen is a major internet peering point to NY ... JHB is not.

Naaa try;
for starters Telkom controls all the bandwidth (and the cost thereof) that comes in and goes out of SA on the main links to the rest of the world. :D

Just to prevent misquoting (by the beast), first let me say that I DO NOT support Telkoms high prices. Now that that is out of the way.... :D

The UK is generally denser than SA - hence pricing is different. It is best to compare SA to Australia, for a realistic picture. Doing so, would yield vast price disparities to us anyway.

Well according to Helkoms price comparrisons the Aussies arent that far behind the UK as far as pricing.

Agreed - however, the point I am trying to make is we need to ensure that comparisons are done against other countries in a similar position to us (remote, sparsley populated, low population etc). To do otherwise only leads to a situation where anyone opposing the argument has a lot of ammo. In the case of comparing us to the UK, critics can easily point to 1) its proximity to Europe (a very big internet hub), 2) its density 3) its high population etc.
These factors make their arguments seem very plausible to the "naive".

Yup.
By Telkoms own logic though, Aus and maybe to a lesser degree NZ, should be much more expensive because of their location. Aus cause of population density and distances even more so.
SA is pretty central, but then we all know that Telkom only compares SA to other countries when it suites them and throws their toys out of the cot when similar comparisons are used against them.

Fair enough.
