I saw a thread recently along similar lines, but it didn't answer the question I now have.

I intend cancelling Telkom's 1Gig @ (approx.) R80 / month offering, at the end of this month, as I'm already using pre-paid with other ISPs.

Seeing as Telkom pre-charge each month for the next month -

i.e. August's charge reflects on July's invoice, which is to be included in the payment before July's month end -

am I able to claim that amount back, as it's 1Gig of data that won't be used, and in fact I won't have access to, as they'll cancel my login details (username & password).

Likewise, about 2 months ago on the last day of the month, I cancelled Telkom's 3Gig / month and in the new month started with the 1Gig package (mentioned above), so would I be able to, in turn, claim for the 3Gigs pre-charged for, but not available to me in the month that followed ?

Has anyone who might've had this scenario been successful in being refunded for something like this, or will I simply be wasting my time contacting them / visiting a TelkomDirect shop to try ?

Thanks in advance to any of you who might have more insight into this .....

They should only bill you for what you use. just make sure you cancel it before the end of the month, otherwise they will bill you for another month

if they billed you AFTER you requested cancellation they refund pretty easy (you should have proof or something of that). if they billed you then you cancelled you might battle

Thx for the 2 replies - unfortunately, concerning that below, one doesn't have any option but to cancel AFTER they've billed you, because when you first order the 1Gig or 3Gig package, they bill you for 2 months on your first invoice -
so you are always a month in arrears, whenever you cancel, and can only try claim for what you've not yet used, after they've charged you (at the beginning of the previous month, incidentally).

I'll try my luck ....

Telkom bills ADSL line and packages in advance. But you do not wait till they bill you again (of course you can if you want). Once you chose to cancel/change phone immediately and cancel. If a new month/period start leave the router off or signed on to another serice.

They are slow to refund and you should always double check. But usually on the next bill the refund is made. It does help to go to a Telkom shop to do this as the call centre is hit and miss. I never lost bandwidth that wasn't a misunderstanding on my part. ADSL line is charged +-15th to 15th and Internet is on calendar months (but I'm sure you know that). As long as you cancel before either of the two dates, depending on which service you cancel, you will receive a refund on the advance payments by the next bill.

I lost money twice before I decided to go to Telkom shops rather.

Edit: You are never lucky enough to be in arrears with ADSL. So cancelling before the dates not after is the best (15th and month end). Example: If you cancel 29 July, you already made a payment for August 1-31 (on the 15th of July). By August 15 or September 15 bill you should get the refund. Just don't use that 1GB on the 1st of August (even if it's still on). For ADSL lines it's before the 15th cancel/change of course.

Thanks cpu. for all the detail & info. provided.

I recently managed to get a credit for almost R270 from Telkom unrelated to ISP services, for charges going back about 8months i.r.o something which was more difficult to get through to them about.

I'm hopeful this should be a lot easier to explain, and will definitely do so @ one of their shops, instead of trying over the phone which tends to be hit-and-miss, as to who you get through to.

Best 2 shops are Greenacres - the Bridge and Walmer Park.

Dot not wait to cancel ISP. Cancel ASAP to avoid any further costs, but make sure you have already signed with another ISP before doing so!!!

Just go to your nearest telkom store and ask them to escalate a billing query for you. You should get refunded in less than a month. Telkom give refunds pretty easy.

Telkom - best 2 shops in PE ; Escalating billing queries

I've only dealt with the Walker Drive branch successfully, before.
On a previous occasion, Walmer Park were unwilling to even lodge a query for the R270 refund I've recently received. Might try The Bridge for Telkom ISP refunds, if I can't get anywhere with Walker Dr.

Re '' caveman'' comment on escalating billing queries :
I think Telkom will only escalate ANY query after they've given you at least 1 incident no., and nothings been done about it yet. Don't think they'll escalate anything without an initial incident no.

Thx. & will keep it in mind if nothings done 1st time 'round by them.

Should've been ''cavedog'' - sorry. Was

Yes mistyped there. Just ask them to create a billing query for you. That sorted me out 2 times with no problem at all. Got my refund after a month no questions asked.

I called for a refund once on my Telkom Internet portion, and it was processed in like 12 days, so you do have a chance
