Telkom's new cordless home phone, a ruggedised black-and-blue monstrosity, is easily the ugliest gadget that has ever arrived at the FM's offices for review. But it is virtually unbreakable.
The Powerphone, manufactured by Cape Town-based 2C Telecoms, is encased in black rubber to protect it from everyday knocks. But since this is a home-only phone we can't really see the point of making it this rugged.
The Powerphone's design is also impractical. Its two rechargeable AA batteries can be inserted only after two large screws have been removed from the back of the device - yes, this phone is held together with screws!
The nominally water-resistant device has an LED torch, useful for when the power goes out. It supports caller line identity - provided you pay Telkom for this service - and has 10 ringer melodies and five ringer volume levels. It can also store 50 names and telephone numbers in its memory.
