OK, I know this has been discussed / debated before and there were many different opinions on the matter at the time, so here goes ...

I have a 4 Mbps line. My area does not support faster than 4 Mbps.

Telkom's website says:
http://www.telkom.co.za/sites/athome/productsandservices/internetandbroadband/adsl/#.U4L1OCjr2Gd

Faster ADSL up to 4 Mbps @ R 299.00 (ex phone line)

Fastest ADSL up to 10 Mbps @ R 425.00 (ex phone line)

So I am paying for the 10 Mbps "profile", but stuck on a "4 Mbps" profile.

I should call them and tell them to move me to the Faster ADSL up to 4 Mbps account option until my area does get 10 Mbps one day (which will never happen) correct?

Yeah, you will need to asked to drop down to "faster 4meg".

Called them and "downgraded" my R 425.00 / month 4 Mbps line to a R 299.00 / month 4 Mbps line.

Sharks!

Charging for a service that they not even providing :erm:

Yes they are sharks. I did it the same time after the upgrades when they told me my exchange will not be getting 10Mbps anytime soon. Saved me a lot of money and my exchange is still 4Mbps max speed.

Just wish I'd woken up sooner.

Maybe I can apply for a refund :p

Of course you can, just ask them to check your connection history to confirm the period that you've been stuck on 4mbps and thus overpaid.
