Telkom pumps R7bn into IPTV

maybe they should pump a few million into staff so they can sort out their current problems...

RPM, are you going to the media demonstration? I guess it would be a miracle if Telkom invites their arch enemy ;)

its no use pumping in all that money if people wont subscribe because of their high prices.

Now Telkom wants to monopolize TV in SA aswell...
There's just no stopping this company!

There is something that I dont and understand and most probably will never!

Telkom currently argues that it is capping its customers because of the fact that bandwith is scarce. How do they think that the current infrastructure that - according to them - sturggle to keep up with the bandwith demand, would be able to accomodate the extra bandwith that needs to be provisioned fore to be able to deliver a reliable service like this?

They would need some proper bandwith for IPTV and with current prices I don't see it viable at all!!

Here at my office desk, my employer stream the TV channel being broadcasted over all the TV's in the bank and I can watch it using my Mediaplayer. It streams at 1119Kb/s and the service is anything but smooth!!! The audion streams nicely but the video not so nicely!

My question is, at the speeds that IPTV would need to be delivered, how would they be able to make it affordable to all when looking at the current situation?

The Microsoft/Alcatel IPTV solution has nothing to do with the Internet and requires no international bandwidth. It will however require ADSL2+ (or similar). The Microsoft/Alcatel IPTV solution will use a set-top box. IPTV is basically cable TV but using the IP protocol. This makes it an interactive experience and allows for things like video on demand.

Well worth a look. (they talk to a dude from Alcatel)

The Microsoft/Alcatel IPTV solution requires a constant 10Mbps for HDTV. Telkom will be doing HDTV.

So thats what happened to all the money we paid Telskum for ADSL. It went into funding Telskum IPTV. [SARCASM]And I thought it was going towards subsidising the phones of those who could not afford a one[/SARCASM]
