Telkom putting lower priority on VoIP ports

One could probably set up port forwarding on your router, or get a piece of tunneling software right? Come IT slimkoppe :)

Really don't understand what Telkom have done?

Can any1 explain in plain english what has happened?

Sure

Firstly, by changing the line sync speed to 640/384, this effectively decreases the maximum speed at which data can be transmitted from your adsl modem to the exchange. because data is being sent much slower, errors and line noise are less deadly. ie: you can have a crap line and still have adsl.

Secondly, by changing the method of transmitting data to your modem, Telkom has introduced extra delays in data reaching you from the exchange. ie: It takes longer for data to get to you.

Skype can be changed to use whatever port you want - I pass through a couple of ports as I'm locked behind a firewall, so I tend to use port 80 as it goes through my proxy. Skype *shoudn't* be any slower even if there was a 25ms lag added as it uses some quite complex algorithms to make best use of shortest routes etc (smart routing, tunneling through firewalls etc). Most users find they get lag (especially in SA) as Skype is very CPU intensive ie as the heat goes up, CPU throttles down, quiality decreases. Lag is only really noticeable if you are on heavily secure networks, or if there are other apps taking up bandwidth (ie p2p...) as some ports have a higher priority (by WinXP firewall) than others.

Hi guys

In Telkom's media briefing they denied that any additional VOIP shaping is done (apart from the standard shaping). If I get any more info I will post it here...
