I'm not in SA yet so I need a little help:

(1) What is the current lead time of getting one of the dobroadband connections up and running on an existing pots line?
(2) Dobroadband 3 says it is R554 - does that exclude the regular phone line?
(3) Can you upgrade and downgrade without cost?
(4) Do they force a contract on you?

Thanks guys

(I am going to be giving up a 6,000k down/768k up 5 static IP residential connection here )

(1) What is the current lead time of getting one of the dobroadband connections up and running on an existing pots line?

Anywhere from 3 days to 8 months. They say within 21 working days. Yeah right...

(2) Dobroadband 3 says it is R554 - does that exclude the regular phone line?

Yes, as far as I am aware. Not only do you pay for your ADSL line, but you pay for your phone line on top of that.

Yes, you are paying for the exact same line. Twice.

(3) Can you upgrade and downgrade without cost?

You can upgrade for free and it is usually pretty quick, though as far as I know downgrading has a cost involved.

(4) Do they force a contract on you?

Depends on who you sign up with. Do Broadband is run by Telkom, and Telkom go moist for contracts so it is more than likely.

Mind if I ask WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?

STAY WHERE YOU ARE.

Make sure to pack a lot of bandwidth into your luggage, cause it's not available locally.

You can also go contract-less on some ISPs. Not sure whether telkom has no-contract one though.

All of Telkoms ADSL Packages are non contract. The only time you sign a contract with them is if you want a free Router. Then your rope yourself in for 24 Months.
I would also suggest going for the self installation option as this normally takes 2 - 4 working days for your line to be converted. Otherwise you will be charged R490 for the installation and you can wait up to 6 weeks.

I agree, stay where you are. i would not give up does kinds of speeds, no way

Thanks for the replies. I have to give up my net connection here to move closer to family. I hope SA gets with it. I'd like you all to have the same connections too.

yea man thats a dream

kinda like winning the lotto, you know it will never happen but you still dream about it

i dont care about speeds, 4 meg line is awesome

i care that int bandwidth is so damn expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I care about speed! when you have a 384k line then speed is often on your mind... and the 4mb line should have a higher upload speed.
