I know cable theft is a huge problem, and is costing Telkom and the country billions of rands. But are they really doing anything about it?
First week of October 2012 cables were stolen in our area. These cables were replaced November 5 and all seemed good. November 9 cables were stolen YET again, as per this article http://mybroadband.co.za/news/telecoms/64474-telkom-service-interrupted-in-pretoria.html.
This has left me offline to this day. Countless calls and emails later, I finally got an ETA of December 2. I phoned them last week Friday to which I was told the line has been replaced and they are busy patching everybody up, which left me happy as it seemed they would keep to their ETA of December 2. Today I found out that the cables which were installed last week, has yet AGAIN been stolen without me even having connection again. Now if I put 1 and 1 together this seems like an inside job more than anything else as the cables are stolen so soon after installation. What else could it be? And now the wait for yet another cable.
This also prompts me to think, are they really doing anything against cable theft? How about going the same route that most of the mining industry uses by installing alarms on the lines, installing the exchanges in more secure locations and or using high security manholes. Surely the cost of these would outweigh the cost of replacing cables the whole time, as well as cut on the frustration that us the end user is experiencing.
I am a home owner, so I cannot just move to another area, and finding alternatives is hard as I mostly use my DSL for gaming, I am a sponsored gamer and mostly play competitive FPS games so wireless and 3G is basically out of the question.
I wish I could stumble apon one of these cable thieves one day.............
