Did anyone ever think they would see this:

http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/telecoms/2004/0409141312.asp?S=Business&A=BUS&O=FRGN

Quote:
“The proposed reductions vary between 10% and 25% on the monthly charges for international data circuits via submarine cable, to all international destinations and will apply to most popular bandwidths,”

Pinch me, I must be dreaming

I'm sure theres a decent amount of fine print in Telkom's reductions...one has to wonder why they are reducing cost now? Surely they should maintain or hike these costs in order to make more $$$?

well i have not read it yet but i can gaurentee it is one of 3 things

1)preasure has got to them
2)they have become a honest bussiness
3)you must sign a 2 year contract to qualify

This site is frequented by the most cynical people I have ever had the pleasure of coming across [:D]

Must be why I feel so much at home...

It's no coincidence that Telkom has has suddenly offered a 33% cheaper ADSL line rental package and are now making similar moves regarding SAT3.

This "big bang " liberalistion has lit a fire under them. And its going to get a lot hotter for them shortly ... they arnt even facing real competition yet.

Of course offering 25-33% discounts on services that have 500% profit margins is not a difficult thing to do.

Imagine what they are going to be forced to offer when competition actually starting stealing significant numbers of their existing customers.

PS: I love Telkoms clarrification of line vs ISP on the front page. Telkom: "We only provide the line! Everything else is the ISPs baby ... PS: You cant use transfer more than 3 GB of data"
LOL

If they suddenly lower prices because they are afraid of competition, I demand a refund!! [:D] We overpaid all this time!

Remember that the international broadband prices dropped (I think 50%), so Telkom has to do something so that they don't look too bad....before they are attacked again (or should I say still)

Good Point.

Wouldn't the ISP's that we use for our ADSL account have had to agree to the 3 Gig Cap. Not that they have a choice in the matter. It's up to the ISP's now to take Telkom to task on the 3 Gig Cap and hold them to their statements.

The more you read about Telkom the more you hate the scoundrels.

I like the way the article lets Teklom place the blame for high prices on ICASA. Their next advert will contain at least 3 similies to the word innocent to prepare us for their next step - to proclaim that they were forced to overcharge "because of ICASA's incompetence".

The more you know - the worse it gets.

20% reduction is piss in the grand canyon. People fail to see just how far off the mark Telkom is.

Do not buy it! Telkom has always had the policy of blowing their own horn on how hard they work to keep intl dialing charges down. You do not see this where it matters... LOCALLY!!!!

<br />I just don't buy it! i also read that the reduction of costs will affect corporate customers mainly.

### What we need in South Africa is cheap 24/7, always on Internet for under R300 a month. ###

Something goes down, another thing goes up, one just wonders what it will be.

EXCELLENT POINT!

To date in my life I have never phoned overseas. That I am aware of that is. Perhaps I have been charged for calls I did not make. [:D]
Local Calls should have been free. If the Government had done their homework properly on the matter before Telkom's listing, we might have seen this happen. A gesture of goodwill to the people of South Africa. A small gesture for the Countless Billions of Rands the people of SA had to pay over decades to put Telkom on the map.

methinks you are way off the mark, we as consumers probably will not see the difference in price per call, but what we can see is reductions in the price of intl bandwidth for our service providers, which in the long run, will mean more money for them, or in the hopeful case, cheaper rates for us/better service (more bandwidth availability)
