Boys and Girls,

Until such time as the SA Government moves Telkom in the right direction you'll never have a quality and cost-effective ADSL. Being fortunate to live in UK I have a 1 Mbit connection, with no download limits, through a service provider. I pay £24 (R260) per month for the ADSL and £10 (R120) for my home telephone line. There are service providers which provide you with a 8Mbit connection, unlimited, which also includes the telephone line, and yes, only £30 (R360) per month.

Don't let Telkom bul**** you into thinking that they incur huge costs in the ADSL roll out and have to make up their cost by charging for the ADSL conection....how is it possible that UK market is able to offer quality service and good prices?

SA is still stuck in the dark ages and Telkom will do as they please until their monopoly is demolished. Hey, what happened to the story that the monopoly was going to be abolished by sharing the Telecom market with other service providers?

I feel so sorry for SA, does the Government not realise that by sharing the market, with not only Telkom as the option, they can create thousands of jobs and bring in foreign investment? Since you elected the Government and it holds 30% stake, have you no say in it. You are paying their salaries! Democracy or what?!

My deepest condolences!

Cheers,

Tomasz

Thats Africa for you!
Just to give you more info for what is planned for next rear in the UK.
A 24Mbit connection, unlimited, for £30 (R360).
They are also planning to launch Web-TV at the same time...no more antennas or dishes!

Well at least we have the sunny weather...I have been waiting for 7 years for competition for Telkom and I am officially anouncing that it will never come.

tomas i have freedom2surf and they giving me a 24mbit connection but i only have 2 weeks of it before i come down to s.a
See you know we got ntl and **** like that,
Sa dont, they only have one isp, tellkom-one line provider
We in the uk have ntl, aol, BT, F2S, ontel, Vodafone etc.
And ADSL in sa is still new, give it five year and sa will be like u.k now
and U.k will be like japan now.
And japan will have vDSL3!!!!!!
like 500mbit connection:eek:
Plus were lucky in u.k since we have no shaping.
Its a nasty thing that effects alomst every ADSL user in S.A
BTW what isp your using 24 quid is too much for adsl 1mbit, you can get it for 18 with no caps and free line rental from bulldog??

Exactly! Telkom does not price according to costs - they price according to what the market will bear. This is normal business sense and nothing wrong with it. The only problem is that they are a monopoly and use every tactic possible to keep it that way. They are extremely anti-competitive and powerful politically.

In a free market costs would be an issue, but for Telkom they just dont come into the picture.

Its like when everyone was complaining about the car prices being too high - but the manufacturers were producing and selling at full capacity - so how could the prices be too high? At least there was some competition (vehicle market not completly open tho!), and prices have dropped, slightly, but even a low-end ATOS has air-con and power steering - Telkoms response would be - ok we will take away the steering wheel and engine to make it more affordable.

Telkoms pathetic 3gb cap for an entire household, and per gig billing over that, is bull****!

Now we're talking.
I agree with you 100%.
But if change must happen, it must come from the higher powers.
Only time will tell.
By the way, Telkom is offering a max. 512Kbit connection, but the Exchange can handle a 2Mbit connection, since you are paying for the infrastructure, demand a faster connection, why 'cos it's there!!! They are charging you for a Porsche but all you get is a scooter.
