I've ordered my adsl the self-install route. I spok to them on wednesday and they said i have to have my router plugged in. got the router yesterday, it's at home pluggd in. phoned them and they said i have to have the self install kit (neglected to tell me that on wednesday but anyway), went to fetch the "kit" lady 4 pieces of paper. Woohoo. Phoned them back, now they say they cant 'see' my router. It's plugged in, configured with a username and password, set for auto reconnect so that it will keep trying but hey say there is no router plugged in. a) can they really 'see' if you have a router plugged in? b) how should it be configured to be visible? When i get home I'll phone them again and see why they cant see it but I'm hoping someone here knows why or how it should be set up.

also, it's a non telscum router so it doesn't have the telkom guest account details (which apparently have to be in there for the selfinstall) and I dont have the telscum PPPoE dialer software, "you only get that if you get a telkom router apparently. Once it's up and running I will have a Linux box as a mini server controlling everything but for now it's just my Pc and good ol windows so i need the software. The selfinstall letter says you can get it from www.telkom.co.za/adsl but i dont find it anywhere, maybe i'm just really slow today....

any advice/experience/help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, when I ordered I made it VERY clear that I didn't want a 24mnth contract with a free router yet they still loaded it as a 24mnth contract.... gonna be lots of fun trying to reverse that one I'm sure!!

Shouldn't be a hell of a lot of trouble (..haha...) since they do not have a signed contract from you.

The application form actually has "NO CONTRACT, NO FREE ROUTER, SELF-INSTALL" written across every page by me... So not really worried but still reckon it'll take a while to have it corrected.

Also did the self-install thing. Waited two months, "no available ports". Received a phone call on a Monday saying that the ports should be available by the end of the week. Decided to plug in my router at various time to see what would happen. The Thursday morning, the "ADSL" light came on. Contacted a ISP & ordered an account, set in router. Connected and have download about 4G.

Never actually spoke to T*m guys until two weeks later. Apparently they are still waiting for installation

What kind of router? Doesn't it have a "ADSL" or "Sync" light? If that is on, the ADSL modem in the router is active and in sync with the far end. If you have a decent router you should be able to telnet into the router and examine the router logs to see what it's doing.

Any router can use the Telkom guest account details. Encapsulation method should be LLC based. Vpi/Vci as stated above should be 8/35 and you should connect using PPPoE. Where it asks for a username and password the details are:

username: guest1@telkomadsl
password: guest1

DNS and all other IP's should be left to "auto assign"

If your router/modem does NOT connect it means that your line has not been patched at the exchange yet and your line is not ADSL capable, phone them back and tell them that. It's really as simple as that. Oh and also please remember to upgrade your modem/router's firmware to the latest one available (see your manufacturer's webpage). Failing to do so will cause endless amounts of trouble.

After you've connected successfully with the telkom quest details please note that: you can NOT abuse it and it will only allow you to view the www.telkom.co.za webpages, so if you can't go to google.com with it, that's fine. Go to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to verify your ADSL - if this is successfull it means everything is A-OKAY.

This information will be useful for when I get DSL :)

OK,

Now I'm helping a friend doing the self-install.

As we could find NO other adsl modems readily available we ended up getting a telscum version.

My problem is, i'm connecting with the guest account and I've verified my adsl installation.

But whenever I connect with my ISP login, I still cannot access any websites.

DNS is working as I get the ip's when I ping google etc.
Nothing wrong with my ISP account as it works on other ADSL lines.

This must be a Telkom thing, problem is, no one ever answers 0800 375 375.
Any1 have any ideas?

:)

Telkom said end March, now its end April.

Will the PPP light come on on the router even if you dont have the guest account configured or not?

On the normal marconi telkom routers there are 2 lights.

One of them should at least stop flashing.

Basically if you see no ppp lights or one of them are flashing , then you have a problem.

The ppp light on the marconi will stop flashing regardless off the user account settings. It is there to show if your ADSl line have synchronised or not.

I have a Billion 5102S... it has a seperate PPP light next to the ADSL one. The ADSL one stays on, but no PPP action. I think my port is not open on the exchange yet :-(

And Mr Nur Pieters is not helping me...

PPP light came on last night when I got home... Whooo hoooo!!!
Did the guest1 account and worked 100%...

Finally on ADSL after 4 months of pain...

No one answers this number... been trying the whole day, everyday for almost a week.

Everytime my gf phones the adsl number they say everything is done, someone just needs to call us... which means only the order is done. If everything was done I'd be able to validate my installation already....

stupid telscum.....
