Hi Guys,

Just a few ponters on the self-installation option of your ADSL line:

  • Get confirmation beforehand that it is available in your area
  • Order the service and opt for the self-installation
  • Go to a Telkom Direct office and get confirmation that it states 'customer requested self-installation option' on the system
  • Get the accounts department to confirm to you on the telephone (record this conversation) that you won't be charged the R404 installation fee
  • Get yourself an ADSL modem that will suit your needs.
  • Get the ADSL microfilters (You need one for every standard telephone device that will be connected to the line)
  • Wait two months for a port to be allocated to you.
  • Try and reach the local department who is responsible for the physical installation/transfer, to get a date booked for your installation.
  • After nothing happened on the installation date, start to call them every hour until it is done.
  • Sign up with the ISP of your choice (NOT TELKOM INTERNET!!)
  • Set your ADSL modem up with the username guest@telkomsa and password guest and verify the line at http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl
  • Set up your ADSL modem with the details of the account that your ISP allocated to you.
  • You should now have access after 30 minutes.
  • Wait for some stupid Telkom idiot to screw up your POTS service on the line by connecting the wires the wrong way around.
  • Wait for your latest account which will indicate that Telkom indeed charged you for doing the installation yourself.

..to be continued.

damn man! this makes me even more scared to get adsl....... i dont know what the hell to expect!

Get confirmation beforehand that it is available in your area
It's not available in the suburb that I am moving to. Why can some get it and others can't?
