This thread doesnt belong here but anyway, here goes:
Telkom has realized that they have competition coming their way...so they have launched some better voice rates:
Residental customers:

Pay R300 per month and receive 1000 local or long distance calls peak time
Unlimited local and long distance off peak calls, upto an hour per call.
and R150 more gives you 150 off peak internet surfing....

looks like SA is getting into the real world, slowly but surely....
Vodacom has promised lower data tariffs...
Cellc with Virgin seems promising...

Maybe we will eventually see uncapped ADSL and 3G at realistic prices and lower call rates on cellphones and landlines...

maybe maybe....

Why is there a one hour time limit on calls?

Telkom's network is a shared resource and if usage is excessive, the quality of service could deteriorate. Almost all voice calls last less than an hour so we are confident this limit won't affect you. If you talk for longer than an hour, during Callmore time, calls will be charged at normal per second prices, but you can just redial to enjoy the benefit during these times.
So by just redialing their quality wont deteriorate? Idiots!

Please don't feed the flying pigs because they leave much bigger streaks down a statue than a pigeon....

I read on the telkom website that once you reach the 1 hour mark (or just before)... you can hang up, then redial - and you won't get charged.

I wish they would stop these nonsense deals - same with the cellphone companies - Sheesh - can't you just give us one decent rate - instead of sitting there running numbers for hours - get rid of these people and give us cheaper phone calls - and cheaper adsl... Very simple. No complicated deals. One rate, one service, one satisfied customer.

oh yeah... and now telkom have to beg us to make phone calls - seeing as they made the whole so expensive in the first place!

Dumb dolts!

Maybe not, Telkom never gives anything, they just find more ingenious ways to confuse customers and to somehow steal more money from them. Like common criminals and thieves! They now try to copy the Cell phone business structure and as such you will be paying a mobile price for fixed line, local calls, which should be inherently free same as they now make you pay for information, that once were free using the Internet, with their per Gig billing system on "broadband" which is actually not broadband at all. Reason is they spend millions to implement structures and software blocks and "Shaping"" to frustrate the Internet users by implementing systems that make the Internet unusable so you would pay them extra for video and music streaming facilities that once were free on the Internet. Likewise you now pay ZAR international rates for local Internet content, which also should be free and excluded from Your 3 Gig cap.

So you see…. there is no gain with Telkom just more moneymaking schemes and somehow you as the client will loose out but still believe you gained as you do not know better.

Use Skype and any other means to get back at them, cheat them if you can, make it as difficult for them as you can until the SNO? or Virgin wakes up. Hope somebody steal their cables as well as their fibre. I wish I could congratulate the guys that do TELKOM harm. I wish I was a hacker.....Uhm?

I do not believe it, you wont be charged the normal per second billing as I understand the comments below but you can restart the count at call-more rates again by redialing, maybe here they get you nailed by charging you another minimum fee for the call again anyway? Always look for the catch with Telkom!!! They are not a business they are a government-protected monopoly out to cheat South Africa citizens while they can, as they know their final hours is approaching fast, Like BT.

One Rate only applies to normal fixed line calls and excludes Internet, International and mobile calls.

How will they know you are making an internet call? Will they have an internal list of all the pop numbers?

They already have most of the numbers for their 'surfmore' packages. You might also find that 0860 numbers are excluded and most isp's use this prefix for dialup as it is 1 number for the whole country.

What a load of cr@p. Typical Telkom.

How many people actually talk that often for that long? Does R300 really justify having this "feature"? My entire telephone bill (home) excluding ADSL and line rentals is around R5 (sic) per month. Sure, I do not talk often, but who makes
1) 1000 private calls per month, or
2) talks for that length of time anyway (remember, that most private home calls would be after 7pm anyway, and in call-more time).

Assuming I make one times one hour call per day, 5 days a week, and maybe 2 calls each (1hour each) on Saturday and Sunday. This means 9 hours per week or +-38 hours per month (working on 4.2 weeks / month) and 38 calls in total. Sure, some people may, but how much talking can one person do??

If I phone 20 people per day, I would make 140 calls per week, or 590 calls per month. Assuming they are short calls, this would cost me around R350 per month at "normal" prices. Who the hell phones 20 people per day from home, when they have been at work all day??

The option 2 is pretty good I think. For R55 rental per month more than the basic R90 rental I can call as much as I like during callmore time. If you've got friends in other cities this is a good product.

Please don't steal my cable! Much as I complain would rather make my own cut-off decision!
as they know their final hours is approaching fast, Like BT
BT is fine and well thank, and living in England. BT made a profit last year (though if you look at the losses they're carrying they actually made a loss.) BT would prefer to make a loss than be the most publicly hated company in britain - like our esteemed telco here.

You're worse than me dude! Cut our telephone calls to support our adsl bill - ergo - if adsl was cheaper I would make more calls!

Those friends (and most of my friends live in other cities or other countries) - now get a piece of email...

So telscum are now capping callmore phone calls!! Brilliant LOL. :D And the network deteriorates after an hour (maybe)...but if you put the phone down and call again suddenly the network is pristine! LOL Gets better daily!!! Since when is voice carried like IP traffic that 'can deteriorate'... telscum are a law and a country all of their own....

Ok, I take back what I said about option 2 being a good product. Just realised that the one rate product almost doubles your call charge during peak times for local calls unless you take the option 3, and most residential customers don't make that many calls during the day anyway.
Usually you pay 38c/min for local peak calls. With one rate option 1 and 2 it is 68c/min! So you "lose" on local peak calls what you "score" on off peak calls.

Got to laugh - can't believe they come up with these schemes (steepled fingers!) This is a whole department all of its own - probably a crew of 30 sit there running these figures all day - Sheesh. How complicated can it be?

After decades of voice calls, Telkom has now decided to call certain call lengths "abuse of the service". Oh well, just a matter of time, I suppose.

Funny though, InfinteCall was DESIGNED for the purpose of making calls exceeding 1 hour. Damn, me brain must be very small compared to those at the Beast - I just cannot understand it.

If Telkom does something "stupid", it is either to protect an already existing service (e.g. ADSL vs. Diginet) or to make more money.
