Hi

I would like to know the upgrades we got from telkom from 384 to 1mb and so on. Was this free or will we be paying more to our ISP's.

Thanks

The question is quite broad as it covers at least three different legs ... so to speak.

Firstly: Will you be paying more for your line rental?
Secondly: Will you be paying more for your uncapped account?
Lastly: Will you be paying more for your capped account?

Firstly: Telkom had their annual price adjustment on the first of August 2012. Monthly ADSL Line rental for their own clients got pushed upwards to:
R165.00 for up to 1mbps, R299.00 for up to 2mbps, R425.00 for up to 10mbps. The line rental wholesale rate to ISPs also increased. So Yes, you will be paying more for the line rental. But, it will depend on your ISP if they passed the buck to you or not. Who is your ISP that you have your line with?

Secondly: On the uncapped data side, you will probably end up paying more for the move from eg. your old 384kbps uncapped account to the new 1mbps uncapped account OR your old 1mbps uncapped account to the new 2mbps uncapped account. But once again this all depends on who your ISP is. I know of quite a few peeps that opted to rather stay with the 1mbps uncapped account option as they did not want the extra expense associated with the account and also did not need the extra speed. Do you have an uncapped account? With what ISP?

Lastly: On the capped data account side you need to remember that the increase in your line speed might cause that you end up using more data per month automagicaly. If youtube is suddenly faster, you will probably end up watching more youtube videos. It is just in our nature to use more and more if more is available. While the per GB rate did not increase you might land with a bigger bill if you use more data than normal. So if you just do emails I doubt you will end up paying more per month. Do you have a capped account? With what ISP?

TelkomTax-ly: Do not forget that TelkomTax/analogue line rental went up to R148.37 per month now. So when looking at the bigger picture your total internet bill at the end of August had to be higher - no matter what. :(

Yes because a 2.7x speed increase isn't worth R10/m

What I mean is they advertised 384 packeges for x amount. Now you were upgraded you must pay them for a 1mb line. Same with the people that were on 1mb must now pay for 2mb from there ISP shouldn't the prices stay the same. I know Telkom increased there line rental fees but not by the amounts the ISP's are increasing there fees because you were upgrade. Afrihost advertised 1md uncapped at R297 including the line rental, now that same 1mb package is R495 because you were upgraded by Telkom.

It doesn't seem right or maybe it's just me.

Now why are the other ISP's charging more. We always complain that Telkom is ripping us off, but maybe just maybe it's the ISP's.

Ok i know you can downgrade back to 1mb and pay the same amount, but what is the use of the upgrade then, then they could have just left it.

You've got it slightly wrong, the 384Kbps bundle at Afrihost was R297 and the 1Mbps R397 before the upgrades, now it's R297 for 1Mbps and R497 for 2Mbps. So if you were on 1Mb you're going to be paying R397 until Telkom upgrades the 384Kb lines to 1Mb and then you can choose to stay on 1Mb and have your bundle price reduced to R297 or you can move up to 2Mb at R497. The 1Mb package currently runs at 384Kb until Telkom does the upgrades.

Read their FAQ's: http://www.afrihost.com/site/page/telkom_upgrades?src=phn

I like the "up to 10mbps" product.

A fine example of false advertising. We're paying more for an ADSL line that has only gotten slightly slower over the last 3 years.

They're upgrading their 384Kbps to 1Mbps for free as soon as Telkom does the upgrades. Mweb also no longer sells 384Kbps accounts, only 1Mbps and up.

That I understand but shouldn't we still be paying what we paid when we were on 384 or am I the only one thinking like this.

Ok now I understand so that MYBB article is a bit miss leading. The article is based on the already upgraded lines and new pricing.

Just remember it will take these slow monkeys a month to flip a switch and upgrade your line, even if you pay for your upgrade.

Everyone I know that was on 1Mb is now on 2Mb with still nearly 3 weeks left before the cut-off date for the upgrades.

I guess it was too much to hope for them to push the 384 upgrades up then
