Telkom steps up to operators

Analyst Rudolph Muller of MyBroadband.co.za has already tested the service using a Nokia phone and a Telkom SIM card.

“It’s debatable whether it will be successful,” he said.

Smackdown!!!

This has made my Friday! :D

I for one am willing to try it out. If it's cheaper I will use it. Provided they cover Gauteng though.

Let's see.

Telkom has shares in a CELLphone company.

This produces the largest part of Telkom's profits.

So Telkom sells its shares in CELLphone company and warns that profits will be down.

So Telkom sets up new CELLphone service?

Damn, I can't see why I'm confused, it's all so obvious.

It IS obvious, isn't it?

It has commissioned research to see if consumers would be happy with a cellphone that worked only in limited areas, such as in their home cities.

Yes because that is what consumers want. A mobile device that isn't mobile. Lets have a round of applause for Telkom.

Also, Telkom wants to roam on Vodacom or MTN's networks? Telkom has been screwing them on prices for ages, how is this going to work???

This could work if you get landline rates when on telkom's mobile network, and then roaming rates on the mobile's base stations. Do away with landlines, yet you still get the benefits of 'local' on-net calls, closer packages etc.

So will calls from Telkom GSM to Telkom POTS be the same price? If not then who cares.

Fixed mobile (at least in an area) is already being done by neotel. Though ppl are using the neotel phone as a landline/modem so its a bit different imho.

I bet the researchers got told what the results must be :P Would be so like telkom :P

I see only one major flaw in the whole scheme... Telkom's involved in it

Converged Services

I think that what they are trying to get to.........

I would like ONE account that allows me access Anywhere / Anytime
with ONE bill to pay to ONE organisation.

Seamless Converged services -- Best practise Converged Billing

For it to be attractive the company offering it will have to be ONE of the best in the market.

Yep, and it is such an obvious flaw - even the eternally incompetent Telkodemonopolies should be able to comprehend this - apparently not though.
There must be some serious nepotism involved in the awarding of this tender - even Telkodemonopolies' incompetence cannot explain the need for research into whether consumers would be happy with a mobile walky-talky device where one cannot walky and talky...

I can see how this will be a good idea.
If you are in a city and say your brother is in another you could pay landline rates cos the call wilkl travel wirelessly to the nearest tower and from there it will use the landline infrastructure.
this idea would not have worked if it was mainly focussed on landline to cell but seeing asyou can basically make a landline to landline call from a mobile to a mobile phone i for one think its a graet idea coz it will save me money...

Th0r, you will likely be hammered for that statement - considering that cellular base-stations do in fact use a landline infrastructure rented from Telkodemonopolies and it still costs an arm and a leg.

There are shades of Telkom Media here. When Telkom first invested in Telkom Media, telcos everywhere had identified the way of the future, and that was by climbing the value chain from telco to content provider. It was all so obvious. Now look at them...

Now we hear that the way of the future is mobile, and that no telco should be without mobile. But is this the reality for Telkom?
  • This is Telkom. What are the chances they'll really undercut other prices?
  • Mobile pricing is essentially controlled by interconnect rates (VC & MTN).
  • If they are really aggressive, they're just going to cannibalise themselves.
  • They've chosen a relatively expensive technology (e.g. compared to Neotel).
  • How much coverage can they build realistically? Roaming isn't a solution.
  • How much market share can Telkom realistically expect?
