The answer is 78 Gigs..

Because with a budget of only R7959.42 you can spend only R7187.14 on 26 accounts, since Hellkom is charging R772.28 for your copper.

26 accounts give you 78 Gig and R193.14 change..

What are you downloading by the way??

TELKOM’s ridiculously high telecoms charges are no secret. But whenever a comparison is made with other countries, Telkom has a puerile tantrum, saying it’s unfair. So The Insider decided to commission a little comparison.


The Insider’s personal propellerhead compared the time and costs to download 100GB of data over Telkom’s fastest ADSL offering (1Mbps) with the time and cost to fly to Hong Kong, visit an internet café, download 100GB of data at the fastest speed (1Gbps), and fly back.

Quite a challenge, eh? Here are the results: Telkom line speed > 1Mbps, download size > 100GB, estimated download time > 9,5 days ISP (34 x 3GB accounts @ R269) > R 9146,00, line rental (ADSL) > R680,00, line rental (residential voice) > R92,28. Total > R9918,28.

Hong Kong Line speed > 1Gbps, download size > 100GB, estimated download time > 13 min, flight (SAA) > R7942,00, internet café > R17,43 (HK20). Total > R7959,43

Difference: Hong Kong is cheaper by R1958,85. So, it’s cheaper and quicker to fly to Hong Kong to download 100GB of data. The propellerhead doesn’t have the time to work out where they converge, but he agrees, we’re being ripped off.
 
Just saw this article now. It's a cute idea, but it'll never float. In that situation, why take 34 x 3gb accounts at R9000+ whenyou can take 1 x uncapped account for R2700 per month?

Having said that, it's still a ridiculous amount of money...
 
Telkom ISP offers Uncapped accounts?
Im not sure but I dont think so....This is referring to using Telkom as an ISP and monopoly.

Well, if a flght takes about 10 hours and downloading just 15 minutes, you can have your 100 gigs in 24 hours..

With the R2700 you have to wait the 9.5 days.. (weather (lightning) permitting)
 
Leave CPT Monday night
Arrive HK Tuesday morning
Use Internet Cafe at airport to get the 100 GB.
Get taxi to town and sightsee for the day
Leave HK Tuesday night
Arrive CPT Wednesday morning.

So, 2 working days @ say R1500 per day = R3000
Air ticket (From Sure) R6999
Internet Cafe R20
Food and drink, say R200
Taxis R300

Total : R10519.00

Other way -
9 working days @ R1500 = R13500
Food and drink, R200 x 9 = R1800
Portion of uncapped account @ R2700 pm (2700/30 x 9) = R810
Portion of ADSL Line @ R680 pm (680/30 x 9) = R204
Portion of voice line @ R92 pm (92/30 x 9) = R28

Total : R16342.00

Still R5823 to play with.

I am still wondering what that 100 gigs is this person wants to download... I bet it's the September 2005 windows XP security update patches :-)

Well at the cost of leased lines from telkom and what is stated here. It might be cheaper for scientists to fly to HK to download the data that should be streaming to the SKA site once/if set up.

Or even cheaper to burn data from the new Telescope onto DVD's and hand deliver them instead of paying for the lines to allow people to download it themselves
