I have a fairly recent line installation at my house, installed by Telkom early July. The installer guy ran a new cable from the pole outside as he said the existing one was too old. I took out an uncapped 10mbs ADSL option with Telkom also being my ISP. I opted to purchase my own modem/router and not be tied to a contract with Telkom. This modem/router (ASUS dual band ADSL/VDSL DSL-AC52U came supplied with a VDSL splitter filter.

My question: the line coming into the house connects directly to the Telkom supplied splitter. I cannot disconnect the splitter as the incoming line does not plug into the splitter but but is connected directly inside the splitter. Into this splitter are plugged my modem/router and the telephone. Does this Telkom splitter also act as a filter? Or should I still plug the filter that came with the modem/router into the line after leaving the Telkom splitter. If I should plug it in, is it better to plug it into the phone line or the ADSL line?

The Telkom guy suggested it should be plugged in and he has set it up with one line running from the Telkom splitter into the modem and the other line running into the ASUS supplied splitter/filter and then into the telephone. Seems odd?

I should add that I am not experiencing issues with this set up, but would prefer not to have both the Telkom and ASUS splitters in use as it only adds to the already untidy mess of wires.

your modem should be plugged directly into the splitter.
plug 1 filter into the open socket on the splitter.
plug your phone line into the "Phone" socket of the filter.
leave the adsl socket on the filter empty.

No, it does not have a filter, you need to plug in the filter onto the Telkom splitter, only if you intend also plugging in a phone, if not don't bother, just plug in the modem directly on the Telkom splitter thing.

The phone has to go via the supplied filter/splitter, your modem/router can be plugged in as per the image above or you can plug it into the free socket on the wall splitter (not used in the above image). If you don't have a phone you don't need the filter and can plug the router directly into the wall socket/splitter.

The dual wall socket has no filter component.

Question the elongated box where Telkom line comes into, where can I buy one of those or do I need to contact telkom.

Need to move a fax/adsl line at work to across the room.
