I would be most grateful if one of our resident experts could take the time to explain -- in torturous detail -- exactly how Telkom WAN technologies work.

What exactly is Diginet -- from the physical to the application layer ( and all the bits and pieces in-between -- like MARTIS and NTU's etc etc )

Likewise ADSL -- a technical description from the Telkom exchange ( including the MSAN ) to the end CPE router and what is taking place at each layer of the OSI ( and IF and where and how ATM fits in ? )

Thanks

Diginet (old) & Martis (new) are two different systems doing the same thing.

??????

Which IS ........ ??????

Talk about one sentence explanations

The MARTIS unit sitting on my desk could probably tell me more.

Telkom Diginet technology dates back to the late 80's manufactured by then STC Boksburg
under license (cannot comment on Martis)

Diginet NTU (Network Terminating Unit at Customer) -> Multiplexers (Rack mounted in local Exchange)
-> Diginet ACE switch (Automatic Crossconnecting Equipment) (normally located in major cities)
-> Multiplexer (in remote or local exchange) -> NTU (remote customer)

Gerry Swart - Sensei ! // MARTIS

Thanks guys -- but we are not really getting to the nitty - gritty

Here are some links to get started on

Gerry Swart -- the dude at Telkom that implemented the MARTIS system

[ You listening Gerry ? please assist ]

Wiki explains TelLabs the [AMERICAN -- MADE IN CHINA] company that makes the equipment ( and Tellabs Oy Finland -- the guys that make / made the SA NTU's

TelLabs

Swart said the pilot system at Telkom SA has been operational for over a year, and "not one card, modem or NTU (network terminating unit) has failed." He added, "The support from Tellabs and Grinaker has been outstanding, and the Martis DXX system hardware is of the highest engineering standard we have yet encountered."

Grinaker are the local SA agents for TelLabs

OK -- over to you Gerry ........

What you want I don't think can be summarised on a single page. All these systems are interconnected or run on top of another system, so if I tell you system X then get's transported over SDH for example you are gonna want to know how SDH works and after that one will have to go into digital cross-connects, (D)WDM, single-mode fiber cable etc Then there's things like multiplexing, protocols and encoding for all the different technologies etc

If someone was to give you all the training materials on the stuff and assigned you to a techie for mentoring you would probably get a basic understanding of how it all works & slots together after a month or two.

There's always the internet which has a lot of info but not always product specific info.

Telkom MIA !

Thanks
I know I give you a hard time :)

What you say is exactly what I am looking for -- as I mentioned -- at one time Telkom put out a nice little book listing and explaining all their WAN technologies.

WHERE IS THE UPDATE ?

They also used to run courses for any interested persons from the public. ( Can you believe it ? Yes it is true )

Surely they must make allowance for interested parties that are not necessarily "embedded" in some or other Telecomms company but that are interested in the technology ?

THIS is the huge difference between us and the Americans -- they take learning and knowledge seriously -- NO barriers or limits -- and it is why SA will NEVER be a "winning" country -- and always just a banana republic.

I hate doing documentation and secondly there is so much information I would not even know where to start. I'll see if I can find any info for you (links) but I'm not promising nothing :D
