So now we know why we have the 'service' we have. With pricks like this spouting such absolute drivel, is it any wonder that telskommel is useless?

I think what we should be asking is how they're able to provide 4 mbit of bandwidth for this product yet charge such astronomical prices for ADSL rental because they claim bandwidth is expensive... seems Telkom fell off the logic bus.
 
Werner I think you're spot on: No internet = No data = No triple play

Triple play = Voice + Data + Video
 
geeks are net addicts....

I think i have now figured out the logic(if u can call it such) behind their crazy pricing. They know that you geeks ;) are addicted to the net and would do/pay anything for a connection, so they charge the net separately so they can continue sucking u dry.
... face it , u cant live without it ... :p
 
Well we where told that the current line rental is there because the networks needs upgrading and the reason for the slow line speeds is due to limiting infrustructure, That as more people moved over and economies of scaled played a role then prices would come down...

What I dont understand is that if they are able to offer the service stated above.. that tells me that the infrustructure is available, that faster speeds can also be achieved..

Though now they say its because of the 3 gig cap..

Telkom changes its story quicker than you can blink, each time giving another excuse that disagrees each time with the previous one. I hope ICASA look at this new situation and realise that SA has the ability, but Telkom are screwing us over.. they said it themselfs now that its because of the cap THEY impliment!
 
Why do they call it Triple Play if the Internet is'nt part of it? Should be double play. Typical, we always get some watered down version of everything in this F'ed up country.
 
Technically it's just video on demand.

What @$@ me off is that if they can do this for VoD, they can at least offer 4Mb local ADSL!
 
yes, remember this VOD stuff will all the local traffic..no international. So, in reality, the price should be pennies comapred to international bandwidth...plus, they would also be ruibber stamping the fact that they can provide uncapped 4mb local traffic. Gun...foot...shoot....
 
Telkom was full of **** yersterday. They are full of **** today and will be full of **** for some time to come. I think all the executives who made statements like these in time past should be ousted from the South African IT community in future. Telkom should be the last place they ever work in management positions in South Africa! Remember them folks for they don't remember us (the customers) but hurt us daily!
 
To make this new service viable, the cost would have to be inline with current DSTV pricing, or nobody would get it..

Now what does that tell you about the true costs involved with Telkoms bandwidth... and we are being capped locally as well from Nov if the rumors are true right???

Analyzing the Sep & May Telkom statements re. their 'triple play pilot' in ITWeb, several comments stand out ...

So VoIP or telephone calls are not part of the 'triple'

So its content on demand, theyre not trying to replace the DSTV service (i.e. live TV channels)

This sounds like seperate login accounts for 'triple play' and standard 3Gig cap Internet access

My guesstimate of how this service will look is ... they're gonna give you some sort of set-top-box/decoder with a Ethernet/PPPoE port. It will login using special ADSL account which provides access to a media vpn to connect to content servers & web + email proxy servers.

The box will be able to download music & video to be watched/listened as they comes down & possibly later for a limited time period (i.e. stored on HD). The Internet part of the 'triple play' may be some sort of rudimentary web browser & email client built into the box's interface.

Your PC will still use your normal 3Gig ADSL account for standard Internet access.

Just my speculation, but it does seem logical based on the comments above.
