Telkom: The Real Cost

You can seriously doubt it all you want, but it stays a fact. No matter how much you hate Telkom or the country, the facts don't change.

South Africa's GDP in 2004 was US$491.1bn. GDP per capita was $11100. Last years figure should be about 4.9% higher @ roughly US$515.1bn and $11600 respectively.

No offense, but it's clear to me that you're ignorant to the fact that South Africa has the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd largest economy on the planet. Haha, R11100, that's so naieve it's almost funny.

Why add line rental? You're paying it already aren't you? You have to have a telephone line to get ADSL in any country on Earth. So why do you add it like some special fee? That charge has nothing to do with ADSL, it's for analogue access. It's true that we're being ripped off and that we shouldn't be paying ADSL line rental, but that doesn't enable us to magically add the regular line rental to the ADSL charges.

ADSL consists of ISP + Line rental. That's the money you pay for ADSL. You don't pay your telephone line rental for ADSL, because you'd still have to pay it whether you have ADSL or not.

ADSL is just a technology. The technology being used is ADSL. You still call your 650 watt microwave a microwave, even though the neighbours might have an 800 watt one.

Infact R11100 was an understatement it is actually around R25000.

I am well aware that South Africa has the best developing economy in Africa, I studied makro economics.

I add the line rental because it is a cost involved in having ADSL, therefore it cannot be omited. You think prices stated in other countries omit your line rental?

Also 192k ADSL is not broadband internet as it does not meet the minimum requirements as per international standards.

Please show me where in the original post the poster refers to "average income per capita"? He doesn't, does he? He refers to national income per capita, which in the case of South Africa was $11100 in 2004.

Secondly, you're free to add the line rental if you wish. I just wouldn't. It isn't a cost involved in having ADSL, and yes, in most other countries the price of the line rental is ommited. Your BT / whatevertel connection fee comes over and above what you pay the ISP.

I realise that we're paying way too much for ADSL and telecommunications in SA, but I don't like it when people try to blow the situation out of proportion by making wild statements like ADSL costs are more than per-capita income and adding other charges to ADSL just to make it look more expensive.

Ok, you know what GDP is? It's Gross Domestic Product, GDP per capita represents the consumer spend per capita. Income per capita represents what people are paid. I believe the sencond one is more relevant to the price of eggs.

My girlfriend had Virgin DSL installed (When she moved to London). The price advertised is 24 pounds a month, she paid 24 pounds a month.

How can you say phone line rental isn't a cost involved in having ADSL? Can you have ADSL without renting a phone line? Doesn't matter though, I mean it's R90.00

Apology accepted, I'm just tired on one-eyed people that just insult people who oppose thier views. I know what you're talking about regards people that just shoot Telkom down, irrelavent of what they do... it's just like MAC users with Microsoft. The attitude is understandable though, I mean monopolies really do suck.

The situation is pretty grave when DSL costs represent 30% - 40% of the average income... I mean thier are many countries in the developing world... look at india for example: GDP - per capita: purchasing power parity - $3,100 (2004 est.) or Average Income Per Capita: US$620 they have DSL for next to nothing (can't remember the figures) and amazingly the proposions are lower than ours, even though thier average earning is about 20% of ours.

The point I'm trying to make is, because we have a strong economy, there is no reason why we should be sitting with one of the most expensive Telecoms providers in the world! Telkom do deserve what gets dished.
