Yeah if that's what the self-install thing is all about, i.e. you install your own modem & filter(s), then I agree, and it will increase MyADSL membership with all the peeps needing help with their ADSL modems/routers...:)
 
hey, im impressed, it's something I would have thought of as a strategist to get my product out there,let the client do it him/herself.

This then falls within their fixed-line head reduction scheme thing. But wouldn't extra call centre staff mean they'll make less profit?

Shame, someone should explain to them the more subscribers the more money they get... etc
 
Hope this comes with a reduction in installation fee - but then again - this is telkom - probably installation fees will stay as is and be more than the current fee if they have to do it
 
The R440 installation fee is not the problem but the line rental and 3GB cap.

Also in most DIY schemes I have read about , you MUST take the modem from the provider as part of the deal.

It is normally some cheapa$$ nasty thing with the default settings matching whatever DSL settings they use and some funky PPPoE dialer frontend messing mucking up your Windows setupl.

Can you imagine helpdesk walking a clueless Joe from the street through the configuration of Netgear/Linksys/Billion and Marconi ???.
 
Thats would be cool... i am getting ADSL soon and am looking foward to something faster than 56k...
 
I can't believe they're only considering this now. They've been doing it overseas almost from the off.
What a waste of manpower. You have to take a day off work so a techie can come over & plug in a microfilter.
 
Tel Call - 13H30 - Thursday Afternoon - Hi - teklom, I accidentally plugged my telephone line into my 3 phase external power supply mains. Now my phone does not work. Um - Incidentally, I tried to call form my neighbour's phone - doesn't work either, their neighbour's phone doesnt work either. I'm phoning form 8 blocks away, the first phone I could find that works, going house to house.
 
Bet Telskum is going to market it like the Spur and their hot rock. Do all the work and end up paying more for the privilege.
 
Yes - go to a restaurant and cook your own food, burn your own toungue, then fingers, then complain when the hot-rock not hot enough anymore and then - sigh - but, installing a splitter + ADSL modem is pis easy, and really should be done by the user.

Yeah, despite not having setup an ADSL modem myself, I don't see why the customer expects Telkomonopoly to do this - unless it is the modem they're getting in return for signing a 24 month contract...

IMO the only way to go with Telkomonopoly ADSL is month2month - never a 24 month contract!!! Buy your own ADSL modem & filter(s), "install" them yourself or get a geeky friend/relative to do it, or spend a bit of time reading up on MyADSL - it all seems fairly generic & relatively uncomplicated...but then I haven't done it personally...

Where "ADSL line installation charge" == R404?, if so, I think that will stay - it will cover the cost of your DSLAM port card, as well as the techie at the exchange that slams your 2 pieces of copper into the DSLAM... I suppose Telkomonopoly could call it an "Activation Fee" instead of an "Installation Fee", whatever floats the Telkomonopoly crude oil tanker...

Also Telkom IMO uses the monthly line rental costs to recoup the cost of the upgrading the exchanges and any new copper lines - so there should be no excuse not to decrease the installation costs with this proposed new setup kit.

The subject of this thread reminds me a lot of that crazy nutter thread I started a while back:

I wish Telkomonopoly would provide clarity on the whole "we gonna cap you a new1 - locally" issue, my guess is they haven't made up their minds & are waiting for ICASA to issue their decree...

I suspect that HomeDSL192 and HomeDSL384 and HomeDSL512 will all be merged into HomeDSLBestEffort - especially once competition heats up, Telkomonopoly won't be able to convince even the dimmest consumer that 192kbits/s is like travelling at 192km/h on the "information super highway"... It's unlikely to happen as a direct result of ICASA's decree on ADSL, but it will have to happen when competition heats up...

I reckon that 70% of folks on DSL use the Marconi modem (the "free" USB modem on 2 year contract) using the Telkom supplied PPPoE dailer and TelkomInternet as their ISP.

Those of us that buy our own kit and will go for the DIY installation are on this forum as we are more technical minded to figure out the various settings or by asking the right people (myadsl.co.za).
 
DIY is great for people like us, but what about people like Mrs Jones and her dry Martini, people who are just plain blank when it comes to technical matters!
 
They should be shot on site (aka, they shouldn't bother to connect to the internet at all)
