Telkom 'to resist cheaper ADSL'

So now it's clear. The reason ADSL is so expensive is to protect criminally high revenues earned on dialup connections. That's it. The reason. No "international bandwidth is expensive" crap or "DSLAMS are expensive" nonsense. Just the plain truth.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wholesale would imply "the more you buy, the cheaper it gets".
This is typical of South Africa - Keep the smaller players out of the market simply by making it reallly expensive for a startup.
I'm a bit surprised that M-Web is pushing for wholesale, instead of maybee "Cost plus x percentage", but then again, maybee not.
 
Oooooh, yea, rpm argued the point that rental connectivity is something only done in South Africa, but another thing done is they charge for local phone calls.

Now, if they drop the line rental on ADSL, everyone would rather get ADSL, no one would dialup (and get charged for it) for internet access, which will mean less revenue for them.

Although I'm not crying about this fact, this does pose a problem and I think that if ICASA was to put their foot down, Telkom would suffer... :D
 
Erm, has ICASA EVER put their foot down? What authority do they have to change anything? From the moneyweb interview, when asked this same question, the answer was dodged.

ICASA cant and wont change things. They might have been subjective at the hearings, but it doesnt take much to keep quiet.

What will ICASA do to change the ways of our third world? The same thing they've always done... Suggest

We can start hounding Pres. Mbeki, seeing as he's so bent on "bridging the digital divide" he can force Telkom to drop local call charges and rental connectivity for adsl!

I mean, if I were to spend 400 bucks on local phone calls, and not pay anything for them anymore, I'd use that cash to pay my taxes or something :D
 
I also get the feeling that ICASA is powerless, and let's face it - if they were to "put their foot down", the legal ****storm that telblow would kick up would carry on forever.
 
OK, if ICASA do nothing (which should be impossible, seeing as all the facts have been put on the table for the world to see) and we take them on, what are our chances then? We cant fight them surely. They were put there to look after us, but they havent ever done anything to ensure affordable phone calls or internet so far. Who is responsible for them doing their work? Joe Soap?

If ICASA does nothing we should demand to audit their member’s finances - actually - they should be made public regardless of the outcome. Hard, but obv not impossible, to take kick-backs if they're constantly being monitored.

It should not come as a shock. I have argued this in my personal capacity for more than a year now and most of the speakers at ICASA pointed this out consistently throughout the hearing period this month.

If you compare the different connectivity options at Telkom, you will see that they cripple the new services in order not to lose customers on the older services.

Crappy practice on behalf of Telkom and it makes sense that this is their main reason for pricing the way they are. We can state without reservation that Telkom’s strategic planners and product cost decision makers are very sneaky and despicable people. They may not know it, but they are running themselves up #$%^ creek if they continue ripping us off like this. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all of the time.

Warning to Telkom: Wake up! :mad:
 
I am all for fighting ICASA if they do nothing after being presented with an abundance of evidence as to the dodgy(at best) practices of telskum. So anything I can do(within reason :) ), just let me know.
Also, do we have any idea of how long ICASA plan to deliberate on the matter? When do you think we will know if they plan to do anything? Did they provide any sort of timeline/deadline?
 
I'm so dissapointed with Telkom - they truly are HELLKOM.

To have such blatantly arrogant attitudes knowing that they are ripping off the public wholesale is evil - no dought about it.

Greed and Power have got the better of common sense.

There's absolutely ZERO partriotism to our country, no feeling of sharing with the people, of helping to build our country by providing an affordable communication infrastructure.

Sizwe, if your reading this, shame on you man, really, shame on you !
 
You know something, you're right. There is zero patriotism in this country. I could have left SA for a much greener pasture. But I stayed on, because this country, despite its problems presents me with the most challenges and allows me the kind of lifestyle I enjoy.

Fighting Telkom remains a challenge, but, getting bandwidth into SA without the use of Telkom is an even bigger challenge. But, I am up for it :-D
I believe that every South African should have access to affordable communications. Telkom doesn't want that to happen. They are driven purely by greed and the dollar symbol. They don't care about whether the poor have a means to call for help in an emergency or not. No, they just want to ensure they get their R1 million salaries every year and keep their pockets nicely lined. If Telkom was serious about behaving like a communications company we would see optic fiber to people's homes. But no, they behave much like the old apartheid relic they really are. Not much has changed!
