Telkom told to pull tariff ad
9/12/2005 22:47 PM
By: Philip de Bruin

Johannesburg - Telkom has been forbidden by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) from using an advertisement in which Telkom proudly proclaims: "We offer the cheapest way by far to phone, day or night."

An ASA order directs Telkom to withdraw this statement "in its present format" immediately.

This ASA order in November followed a complaint that SP Overbeek lodged with the ASA after the Telkom advertisement appeared.

Overbeek's objection was that the advertisement was misleading because these cheapest tariffs apply only to calls made from one landline telephone to another landline telephone.

Overbeek submitted documents to the ASA showing that calls made from Telkom telephones to cellphones are more expensive than calls between two cellphones - in Overbeek's case the service provider Cell C.

Telkom's defence was that the advertisement was "factually correct concerning calls between two landline telephones".

The ASA said the Telkom advertisement "suggested that Telkom compared its tariffs with other telecommunication service suppliers".

"At best, a reasonable person would be confused about which calls were assessed at the advertised tariffs and therefore about which calls from Telkom were the cheapest.

"The ambiguity could mislead consumers."

Yeah - by the end of next year we will be hearing them say to their shareholders "Well, in our defence, we were not able to operate in a competitive environment"
:D

What would happen if Telscum were a politician?
1. would be president for life
2. would change the constitution everyday (notice the prefix CON...)
3. would fight opposition

so basically

you could say Telkom is Robert Mugabe
Naaah, Robert Mugabe has some standards after all...

How about the ad...'Where No South African has gone' Surely Mark Shuttleworth was a South African...
