Hi

A mate of mine put through an order for the R799pm deal with telkom uncapped FTTH and was told it would be done, then he gets a phone call saying you only qualify for this deal if you also take a LAN line with it.
Is this true, as it does not state this fact anywhere.

LAN line? Are you perhaps referring to an Analogue line? (Landline)

I also got the email from them and it states that landline rental is included. Wondering if I should go for this or rather try Cybersmart Lightspeed 400MB line for R899.

Probably good to check the fine print. Their pricing for 10mbps uncapped here is R1188, so they're giving up almost R400 for something.

Specifically, check out what the * means - it says "acceptable use policy", which the mealy-mouthed lawyers at Telkom have probably set up to mean "if you surf wikipedia all day with no pictures you'll probably be fine".

And they lock you in to 24 months. What is it with this company and lock-in? The world has moved on. If they offered a rational product they wouldn't need to lock you in.

Alternative: go with something like Cool Ideas on an alternative network, get 25mbps uncapped and unshaped with no 24 month contract for the same price as Telkom's "special deal".

Nice shilling...

Now ask your Cool Ideas mates to provide me with that 25Mbps uncapped deal using Openserve's Fibre as only OS have Fibre in the area. I also want to retain my existing landline number and mailbox.

You also make a huge assumption about the AUP... what are the limits before it kicks in?

PS. You say it is uncapped and unshaped... is that very specifically mentioned in their fine print? Absolutely nothing about network issues beyond their control, etc? 25Mbps 24/7, full taps?

I love the assumption of intent and the BS word "shilling". It's an example, relax. They're not my mates. I do intend to try them as soon as my fibre is up and running, which is why I think of them first.

Here's my opinion: Telkom's offering sucks, don't sign up with them. Don't sign a 24 month contract because once you do, you're stuck for 2 years and lose control. Leverage the open access you get to choose any company that runs on the network available to you. If and when you hit issues, move to another ISP, rather than bemoaning the one you have for two years because you're stuck. Increasing competition helps customers, so don't give your business to the enormous monopoly unless you absolutely really have to. Try not to go for a mickey-mouse operation, but also don't go for the monsters because you'll never register on their radar. You're a tiny blip, just pay the money, eh?

I'm focused on companies that provide on Metrofibre because that's the network we're getting in my area. If you have the numbers for why Telkom's pricier 24-month contract is the way to go, please post them. I seriously don't care about being right, I care only that we end up with the right answer.

My Telkom story:
When we moved into this house I tried setting up ADSL on a 3-month free modem, trial special with Telkom. The Telkom tech who came out was awesome. I gave him an immediate compliment on HelloPeter. Then the fun started.

Their ISP wasn't able to connect us so I got an Afrihost account set up in about 30 minutes, while I kept trying to sort out the Telkom ISP. We tried everything. I tried, my wife tried and she finally lost it and told them to cancel. At just under 3 months we cancelled because they never managed to set up the account in all that time (again, line was fine, but ISP never was). Multiple (many) 40-minute phone calls, never once got us working. Once we did cancel, they cancelled the line and not the ISP (unbeknowst to us) and repeatedly tried to get us to pay for it. We finally got them to realise what had happened and cancel it properly, only to have it spontaneously wake up again about a year later. Yet another visit to the Telkom shop, yet another round of discussions to try get them to stop billing us. So 2 years of BS for a service they never provided (specifically, the ISP part). I will never deal with them again, and I'd rather deal with any smaller ISP because they don't take 40 minutes to answer the phone and then tell you that it's working when it isn't.

Many of the individuals were awesome to deal with. The greater aggregated service level was a nightmare. Don't do it, save yourself. What pricing, 24-month lock-in fun could Telkom provide to make up for that horror?

(Um, full disclosure: currently using Telkom mobile's 3G, which has worked fine and no issues. But that predates the ADSL horror.)

PS. Only OpenServe available in many of areas of PE, mine included. I'll be using Crystal Web to do the sign up.

PPS. I've had dial up, ISDN and ADSL since the beginning of time and only had one network fault in all those years... caused by my tree snapping their cable. Different strokes for different folks.

Yeah, at least you can get e.g. CW to handle the relationship. Anything that means you're not dealing with the Borg directly :)

I dream of a site/page that highlights all the up-to-date differences between the network providers, and ISP's. E.g. speeds, service levels, outages, current status, pricing, etc. Do see articles periodically that highlight various numbers, but it should be part of "the way" to help people make decisions.

Was hoping against hope that a mybb "journo" would do this for us and not only focus on a select few...

Will take some effort as it should include all factors that make up the FTTH experience.

Seems like MyBB is focused on providing weekly content rather than evergreen, so regular "hey look new shiny" rather than "here's 1 stop to help your decision-making". Does make sense to have it here, but they probably have lots of marketing spend from the big boys so unlikely to do something that shows them up. But I don't know what I'm talking about, so maybe they're independent enough to do it.

You don't have to go with a contract. You can go on month to month but the offer ends in March 2017 if you are on month to month.

You probably live next to LaraC then, she has a horde of Telkom techs camping in her garden, making sure the line doesn't go down for their poster child. :p

I've had at least six or seven faults in the last two years, overall near two months downtime. It's a bit skewed due to the one three week downtime. Would avoid Telkom if I could.

OpenServe fiber should be better in that regard as it is fiber, but keeping the pricing the same due to going through IPC is crazy. Pretty much all competitors are cheaper.
