Telkom Uncapped LTE

Hey guys, so to those who have this solution, is it worth it? I live in Centurion and am about 50m from the tower. The speed test at my house was good but I know some people have complained in the past. But Telkom did do some upgrades on their towers, so is this worth while now?

I am comparing to my 2Meg ADSL line that I currently have.

What do you mean by worth it?

In terms of price, then yes, unless you have a fibre alternative in your area.

In terms of performance, it would be best to first test the service by either using someone else's router, or I think Telkom can do a "demo" on request.

I for instance get a consistent 30-40Mbps Download and 6-8Mbps Upload.

I mean is the solution stable and does it perform consistently (like the same all the time)? I have had a home demo and the results were 60Mbps down and 10Mbps up with a ping of 30ms or something. But will it stay that way at night when other people start downloading etc? I do not have fibre in my area and am tired of waiting for it to arrive.

Its a wireless service with a high contention ratio, so best-effort.

Its a small gamble you have to take, hopefully Telkom will increase backhaul if congestion occurs in order to ensure consistency.

IMHO stay away. Doesn't matter if you have a tower in your back yard. They are going to throttle the tower over peak period and then it doesn't matter. Wait for fibre, period.

This is the problem, currently it is a mixed bag since some say it is awesome and others say it is not. Problem is my 2Meg ADSL is getting to the point of super frustration, it just is not cutting it anymore. And fibre is not even a thought at the moment where I live, no one seems to be installing so I rate that is at least a year to 2 away.

Over peak periods my speed is less than 2meg, with 11meg upload. I have the contract now and its going to be a biatch to get out of it. 24months of living hell. Unless the month to month option is still available, think its slightly more expense (R799pm or something) but that's the way to go then.

Where are you based? And what is the ping like during those times?

Do the Telkom technician who comes to install the antenna care only if the bars are below 3??...im getting 3 bars out of 5 but the speeds isn't consistent (around 6-15mbps).

I declined when they asked to come install it because I thought I was already set up good etc... Just wondering if they actually try to get the best signal possible.

Looks at it this way at best it will perform 40x better than the 2 Meg line at worst it will perform the same as it. And it costs the same. My 2 Meg line used to go at 1meg. So it was a 1 Meg line which isn't even offered anymore. If you had an option for 20meg line or vdsl then you should go for those but if you don't then this is it.

And if no one is digging up your driveway now it could be 2 years before anything better.
