Telkom upgrade = Epic fail

Was considering phoning telkom to get my line upgraded from 384k to 4mb (10mb if possible), never mind that idea.

If your line can handle the speeds, its the best thing you can do for yourself if you use the internet a lot. For me going from 512k to 4mbps (now 10mbps) was the best thing ever, you don't realize the difference it makes until you experience it. The people here complaining are not the majority even though they try to make it seem that way.

Guys, I have not been upgraded yet and was struggling yesterday on speedtest to get 1024 download speeds (4MB line). My ping to a server in JHB was over 300. I phoned Telkom and complained, then after a while it was better again. Not sure what they are up to, but it is affecting (by the looks of it at least) everyone. I was talking to some firends of mine (all over the country - Bloem, Strand, Toti, Alberton) who all had the same issues. Maybe there is a general problem?

funny enough is that the internet is only slow during day and sometimes at night but mostly fast during night only.

Also anyone else experiencing the following problem now? Line is syncing but no connection to isp. I tried IS business uncapped and Mweb uncapped with 2 diffirent routers.

dude just STFU. just because your lucky doesn't mean that the upgrade is still ok. There was a lot of people that was very happy with there 4mb. I know I was very happy with 4mb. F..k you idiot.

I'm thinking of downgrading the line to a 512kbs internet for the time being just to get it stable and wait for them to resolve the issue and them bump it back up to 4mb. for me also reliability is better than speed.

One more question. How do I find out what is really happening. Are they really working on my problem cause Telkom keeps on telling me the same thing. "The technician is busy with the fault". I'm getting sick and tired of this updates

Jip. Don't do that. You will end up paying for an unstable connection that is so crap you can't even browse.

What a load of garbage.

@bullfrog
Check your line attenuation and noise margin, if there is still enough "headroom", get upgraded to 4mb. There is nothing wrong with the stability of 4mb, just double check in your router stats that the quality of the copper is good enough for it.

nelis, you are an angry man. watch your language and be patient - your internet wont be broken forever. It amazes me how people always need to complain and highlight the negative all the time. Telkom is finally upgrading our speed - i dont think any company could get that right without a single fault but i'm sure they will come right. my adsl line has had problems over the years but when telkom say they are busy fixing it, they are, and in the end it gets fixed. unfortunately not all their problems are solved by flicking a switch.. they actually have to do stuff sometimes. stuff that takes actual time.

This is so true. I'm sorry for getting so angry. Anyone in this situation will get angry. I that works in IT should also know that. I'm just upset that our line was down a few weeks ago for 2 weeks and they did nothing until we got very angry with them. suddenly the line was fixed. So please understand be also.

I'm also sure it will come right. The question is why 10mb and not start at 5mb and if everyone is stable at 5mbs then move up to 6mb and so on till you reached 10mbs.

Because Telkom is already falling behind when you look at the rest of the world in terms of speed, liability etc and the first thing the MAJORITY(non-tech)people look at when they think of the internet is...speed. Plus remember South Africa wants to bid to host the Olympic games and other events, having 5mb as your top speed is not going to go very well when the rest of the world is now getting used to streaming in HD with no buffering. So Telkom and the government are just upgrading whatever they can in whatever shape and form they can so it looks like(to the rest of the world/investors) that this country is actually doing something when it comes to telecommunication...when in reality....
