Telkom upgrades the ATM network
Dear Chris Roper
Telkom has recently informed UUNET SA of its plans to roll out a dynamic routing protocol called Private Networking to Node Interface (PNNI) across its ATM network over the period 10 January - 17 March 2004. The new technology will in future automate processes thereby drastically reducing any downtime that might be experienced as a result of a core network outage.
Over this timeframe, Telkom will be conducting hardware and software upgrades on all of its ATM switches across the country, which will result in a period of unavailability on the particular switch being worked on. Telkom is putting procedures in place in an attempt to minimise the inconvenience that such a process can cause. Proactive procedures will include directing traffic off a particular node and redirecting it to an uninterrupted network supply. While Telkom will endeavor to ensure this occurs, it is a difficult process to manage and therefore some downtime can be expected.
This is a national upgrade by Telkom to improve service and network supply. While UUNET SA will be making accommodations in this regard to ensure our customers receive the full benefits of such an upgrade, we feel it is essential to put our own procedures in place to further minimise any inconvenience this may cause. Therefore, we have arranged that Telkom interrupt the switches that are located onsite at our hubs for a stipulated time period only. This will only have an impact on customers operating on the particular hub. We would also like to make you aware that other switches within the Telkom network may also impact the UUNET SA network for a minimal period of time.
All upgrades will be performed during Telkom maintenance window time periods, which are from 01h00 - 06h00 in the morning, in an attempt to minimise the effects of downtime during South African business hours.
Below is a listing of the scheduled dates that each hub will be upgraded within the particular region for Telkom maintenance. UUNET SA would like to urge you to examine the listing below to ascertain when the maintenance work will be conducted on the switch you currently operate on.
