I think Telkom should update their coverage map along with their disclaimer. The disclaimer mentions "radio" technology... trees, buildings, geography, but it doesn't say anything about cables!

False advertising?

Edit: Maybe I should ask the ASA for their opinion.

My area is definitely in the darker shade of green, which means that VDSL has been rolled out.

Here is the disclaimer:
Is your area not covered?

The Telkom Mobile network offers a full 2G / 3G network in both the 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. There is general coverage in the 6 major metropolitan areas and overlay coverage provided by MTN on a national roaming agreement. The network utilises the latest in global mobile telecommunications technology and leverages the world class copper and fibre infrastructure that Telkom has to offer.

Services include packages catering for full voice and data connectivity, with a 7.2 Mbps data service and capability ramp up to HSPA+.

I'm talking about this map, but only xDSL.

They're probably covered by this sentence:

I'm just very disappointed and thinking that physical cables should be mapped more accurately.

Same here. They activated VDSL in my area last week Thursday. We're still shown as being in the stage of rollout.

Do you know how much cable you are referring to?
Well, if there is a DSLAM that does not support VDSL, eliminate all the blocks/houses that are connected to it. Don't claim that the whole suburb/region is covered.

I'm sure Telkom has access to that kind of data.

How many people will you need to map and update maps of every town, city and dorpie in the whole of South Africa?

Per the disclaimer... it will never be 100% accurate.
Sure, then I advise them to make it even bigger. It's good for marketing! Hell, their disclaimer allows them to do it.

By the way, every city, town, farm does not have VDSL, so we're not talking about mapping the whole country, just the VDSL-capable DSLAMs.

*MSAN/ISAMs

It's not that easy.

Ask anyone you know who works for Telkom technical about the NetData project.

I'm sure it's difficult.

Now, if only SARS and Joburg City/Water could lose all the information that they have on me, because I'm one in 50+million. That would be nice. :p

Edit: I am not a Telkom-hater. In fact, I want to pay them even more money. :)

...and yet, for some reason, they are able to map areas to this level of detail:

Weird

Oh well, I've downgraded my line. The coverage map is a lie. Maybe I'll try again in 2020.

At least my VDSL router has dual band wifi, so it hasn't been a complete waste.
