Telkom vs AT&T/BT/DT/Telstra

Thought I'd have a look briefly at Telkom's profitibility based on a comparison of profit as a percentage of revenue... I don't know if anyone else has done this before but it is definitely interesting...

And at number one with profit being the highest percentage of revenue issssssss (anticlimax - no surprises and almost double than #2) :

#1 - Telkom (2007)

Revenue: R51,619,000,000
Profit : R14,469,000,000

Profit percentage of revenue: 28%

#2 - Telstra (2006)

Revenue: $22.8 billion AUD
Profit : $3.18 billion AUD

Profit percentage of revenue: 14%

#3 - British Telecom (2006)

Revenue: £19.5 billion
Profit : £2.6 billion

Profit percentage of revenue : 13%

#4 - AT&T (2006)

Revenue: $63,055,000,000
Net Profit: $7,356,000,000

Profit percentage of revenue: 11%

#5 - Deutshe Telekom (2006)

Revenue: EUR 61.3 billion
Profit : EUR 4.3 billion

Profit percentage of revenue: 7%

Congratulations Telkom! Another proudly South African and a definitely proud accolade - it's safe to say that you are possibly the most profitable telecoms company in the world by double! I would've included your 2006 results but I thought that would just make it worse.

(For those interested their profit percentage of revenue for 2006 was as follows :)

Telkom 2006
Revenue: R47,625 million
Profit: R14,677 million

Profit to revenue ratio: 30,8%

The reason I used telkoms 2007 report for the rankings was due to the various times for which overseas companies release their financial results.


Please note I'm no financial guru and hope the above is as accurate as possible at 1am in the morning ;)

And they whinge and moan about how expensive the local loop is, yet still make a fat profit???? :mad:
 
And all this done probably with a "bloated" cost structure. In most cases, a monopoly is a price setter and not really too concerned to be too cost efficient. Only when it is not a price setter anymore, but have to accept the given market price, cost efficiency becomes an issue to ensure profits remain high.
 
oh my word. this is ridiculous... pathetic. really. we need something changed very quickly.
this should be advertised on everything. so people know how bad telkom is...
 
Rough calculations we did last night says that telkom's recent price "decreases" nets them more than double the amount of money than they would lose with the broadband reductions
 
and then people moan about poverty in Africa - people overseas must wonder if this is just a trick, and someone is having a fat laugh behind our backs

Worse than exploitation. Piracy could be a word?
