I just received this sms:

Dear customer, we would like to inform you that the free Wi-Fi access at Telkom Mobile hotspots will no longer be available from 1 July 2019. Thank you for using our Wi-Fi hotspots in the past. From 1 July 2019, you will receive an additional 100MB of free Telkom Data for the remainder of your contract period to compensate for any inconvenience caused. For more info please visit https://tlkm.link/WiFiDecommission. Regards Telkom Team

I wasn't using the service very often, but it was handy to have for when I did need it. Anyway, RIP Telkom Wifi.

Really stupid idea to cancel the free wifi, they have tons of these fastnet base stations all over the place and if they enabled seamless switching from 4G to WiFi they could have "base stations" all over the place instead of worrying about building new towers and worrying about coverage.

It was too complicated to get working on a cellphone without a Telkom SIM (used to qualify if you had a LTE contract) probably why most people didn't bother.

If you had a telkom sim, there was no need for certifactes and CHAP/PAP authentication configs.

With a Telkom SIM it worked well.

I thought of it as a value add for TM customers. Admin for the rest- was on par with what you'd go through if using a competitor paid WiFi service?

^this,

The amount of places I had been where they had both Telkom Wifi and AlwaysOn - It was just easier to me to connect to AlwaysOn.

So I hardly every used the Telkom Wifi

I've hardly used Telkom's Wi-Fi so this isn't an issue for me. The 100mb of Telkom data is a nice gesture.

Most other paid wifi services were easier to use e.g Always On, Vast.

It was supposed to be a value add for all Telkom customers even those with only a router, they just made it too complicated. When I was with Afrihost I just had to sign in with my credentials on Always on and I was connected.

Could never get the bloody thing to work if you found a Telkom Hotspot.

I got it to work (with certain hotspots) on my previous device-contract with Telkom, but couldn't bother with my new device-contract.

So Telkom made a mistake on the compensation....

Got another SMS about wifi being discontinued and compensation. I'm getting another 100mb. I'm like that is nice. When I check the balance they added too many zeros.... 102GB of data was added.

This is brilliant. I love it when incompetence works out in my favourScreenshot_20190827_074544_za.co.deloitte.digital.telkom.jpeg
