telkom will block voip in nov

Yes it will happen, it will then be incumbent on us to find workarounds
 
/me is beginning to think I should demand a tax refund from governmint.
I mean - when they sold my hard worked for teklom, where was my share of the money ?
Maybee we can then use that money to build a decent company.

If they do it will be absolutely brilliant. It means that they pretty much can and will block anything that will be cheaper and better service for the South African public and bad for them around. I am beginning to think that it is a case of they will always win and the consumer will always lose...
 
You guys are paranoid, Telkom would never go that low. Remember, they're a responsible corporate citizen.

Agree 100%. Absolutely.

They will NEVER block VOIP ports, they'll just offer an alternative VOIP service which will be capped at 2bits or 1mS whichever is the sooner, but you will be able to purchase extra VOIP bandwidth in 100 TB chunks usable for a single call or a single day on a use it or lose it basis.

Telkom WILL look after your best interests.
 
I recon it will be quite difficult to block VOIP protocols. There are so many and changing to a new port is not that difficult, take Skype for instance. What might happen is latency on weird protocols. That might make VOIP almost unusable.
 
Highly unlikely they will do that since as PeeNPoke pointed out, Skype has a very wide range of ports ( a bit like Bit Torrent). Also for online games, people use VoIP in games such as BF2, CSS, America's Army etc.
 
They won't bother to try block VoIP specifically, they will just make everything but http/pop/smtp so degraded as to be useless.

Many people including myself have experienced vastly degraded VoIP, streaming radio stations and other protocols this month already. Whether this is deliberate is uncertain, but it certainly is convenient for Telkom.

I am sure you could tunnel the stuff you want in something that will look like http/pop/smtp but so far not many applications do this, and not many will as the authors don't see the need - the rest of the world does not have Telkom.
 
They will make sure that VOIP works 100% except they will also make sure that VOIP will use 5x more bandwidth magically so that you get capped faster. And then they will use that as example why you would pay less to just use the landline.
 
but could they block it and make ppl pay for it

like to unblock it on their line or something along those lines?
 
I've tried using Skype three times in the last two days. The call quality is so bad that it's unusable.

Anybody else gettin this? Or are Telkom targeting individuals now? :eek: :D
 
The 3rd world VOIP call quality might be a result of Telkom running low on bandwidth, since the vast majority of ISPs are overselling 3Gig accounts as 30Gig accounts and everybody (myself included) is just enjoying the free ride while it last (1 Nov) :eek:

Umm, no. Telkom will NEVER run out of bandwidth, even if we ALL had to use like 60gb's each. Its just something that doesn't happen, like Afrikaans singers on Idols...

I'm sure Telkom wouldn't block VOIP. If I were them, what I'd do is I'd block everything except HTTP (cos who needs more?) and then get rid of these pesky "consumer" people. A nice clean network with just Telkom employees on it :)
