I noted that it says up to 512kbs line speed. @ R240 its much cheaper than the 512k adsl service.

If you are closer to the tower will it mean better speeds than lets say 5km away?

What are the speeds people get with telkoms WiMax. I stay in richards bay. Empangeni has the WiMax tower and it is huge. I'm just out of the blue sircle that telkom has on their coverage map. Will the speeds be bad or the same as right next to the tower?

This would seem to be a moot point.

Called Telkom this morning (20 Aug) and was informed that Telkom are phasing out their WiMAX service. The lady could not tell me if this was all together or if they were just repositioning the product. Eitherway I had to send a fax to some production department with my name and address and somebody would contact me with the proposed alternative. There was no number I could call to discuss the alternative, but I eventually managed to gather that this alternative is 3G. I already have 3G.... I need a last mile service to back up DSL.

This is really a shame as the WiMAX service is possible one of the best, most cost effective services Telkom have brought to market yet.

Be interesting to know the reasons for this change of heart.

I agree Andre, I have a wimax connection as redundancy to our VC HSDPA connection, and would hate for Telkom to discontinue it completely. Please post any info you might receive.

Damn so their reckon that 3G will sell better? With a full hd 0 local bandwidth and only a few gigs and a higher price? what the hell! That is what made Telkom's WiMax offering so good. Use any ISP.

Telkom will always install ADSL first and only if there is no infrastructure will they install WiMax. It is not a service they advertise and should not be seen as an option when requesting a broadband service.

I do not know where you got the above information from but I am almost 100% sure it's not true.

I managed to get a Wimax installation with Telkom while still having a working ADSL line.
