Telkom Wimax Offer Understanding Sought

Greetings

Telkom phoned me the other day and offered me a Wimax connection, for a fee of R240.00 p/m.

This they say is uncapped bandwidth. They claim it is the same speed as a 512K ADSL line. My question is what's the catch we all know how much bandwidth is in this country and the issues that have gone back and forth over capped bandwidth. Other uncapped providers that go via satellite don't even come close to this offer.

My questions then are is this local bandwidth. If not then how does the international bandwidth run via fiber or satellite I presume fibre they would use their own network Saix.

It would be appreciated if anyone can shed some light for me on this one.

Well the R240 is only for the Wi-Max service, which is 512 up and 256 down....

That excludes your isp charges... atm Telkom is experimenting with local uncapped bandwidth... that's all. Other isps have their own offers.

if i'm not mistaken they also only offer it to you if you don't have ADSL access?

yes, they only offer it to you if there isnt a adsl footprint in your area. the R240 pm is the "line" rental basically. Its a few bucks cheaper than the wired 512k adsl version. as photoman mentioned this excludes your actually isp (or bandwidth) costs.

keep in mind, you can use any standard adsl account on your wimax "line".

Are you sure? - I was under the impression it was supposed to be 512kbits/s on the downlink...
