So I was fortunate enough to have Telkom Wimax for more than a year before I had to cancel it as I moved to a new complex. It took me 3 months to get the damn thing canceled as Telkom will not close your account until they retrieve the equipment. I however managed to get the account closed without them collecting the equipment but since it was still at the old complex I removed it for save keeping just in case someone at Telkom wakes up one day and wants it back.

So the other day I decided to see if I can get reception from my 3rd floor apartment and to my astonishment I got the same signal strength as I had before from the same tower. It is then that I decided to apply for Wimax again making sure they noted that I already have the equipment. The order went through to there installations department within a week but here comes the problem. It seems like they are not using the 3rd party company to install their Wimax anymore and now uses inhouse technicians to do this. However they have so little Wimax trained technicians that I will have to wait forever for one to become free.

You go Telkom. I will phone everyday until you are sick of me.

Yup same Here, apparently theres only like 5 inhouse technicians that can actually install Wimax for Telkom, I waited 21 days before my Wimax Installation was completed, I must say it was worth the wait, and its working perfectly. Rather be patient, as I was also very impatient, and went for Neotel, and that was the biggest mistake of my life.

Ye my heart broke when I had to cancel Telkom Wimax and move to iBurst. But if there is any chance of getting Telkom Wimax back I will hang in there.

I ordered Wimax last monday as I cant afford to pay for 3G anymore and have no landline at home. The guy in the Telkom shop told me that I will be contacted within 48 hours (lol).
Haven't heard from them ever since. Should I start bugging them or will I just waste my time doing so? Any other advice?
Sorry for the thread hijack...:o

I would bug them every day until you get a solid answer. Stock is always a problem with Telkom Wimax so you might have to wait for that.

Finally got through to the Wimax installations department today after talking to a sales agent on 10219 who actually knew whom to contact. The little note the sales people made when I places my order about me having the equipment already never made it to the installations department. They were waiting on stock before they would contact me with an installation date. Now that they know I have the equipment the install will happen this week.

Got a call from Telkom yesterday to tell me they will be doing my install today. Let's see if that will happen.

AllBrain, how did it go?

The technician just left, but the Siemens Gigaset SX762 he installed is supposedly "disabled" so I can't log into it to change any settings or activate the wireless network. Also trying to get MWeb to activate my account, which seems to be another headache in itself...

Oh you took the option of having a phone as well? I just went the data route. Well I have not heard a peep out of Telkom after they called me. Their one Wimax technician must have been at your house. :D

Well Telkom came out a day early to do a signal test. They did not phone me or even enter the complex to do the signal test. I contacted 10219 to find out why they did not come out as promised to find out the above and my order has been closed. Now I am still sitting with their equipment which I have temporarily setup to test the signal myself and almost have full signal. Next up the street corner rubbish bin for some revenge on Telkom.

First - What's, Next up the street corner rubbish bin for some revenge on Telkom?

Second - For Telkom Wimax do you pay for the equipment or rental? So as far as I see only R240/m for 512k connection?

Ha Ha... The rubbish bin comment was a little joke. :D

The Wimax equipment stays the property of Telkom so there is no once of cost for the equipment except for the installation of the equipment. So after the installation is done you pay R240 for your 512k access. You can then choose any ADSL ISP package to gain access to the Internet.

hmm definatly a cheaper option to the ADSL 512k, I guess I should give them a call, and see if thier one tech is wondering around close to my place. :)

Today Telkom did not send out one technician but 2 technicians to complete my Wimax installation. Signal strength is great and testing went fine. Grabbed myself an uncapped account from Axxess and will be doing some testing of my own tonight.

OK, my problem should be even simpler to solve then. I'm renting and the house came with a WiMAX setup that was working fine for the first few months. The contract stayed on the owner's name and I just paid him the monthly R240. In April it stopped working, and I then found out from Telkom that the account has been cancelled because the owner did not actually pay the account. They also never came to fetch the equipment.

So, the setup should still be fine, so I don't actually need anybody to come out for an installation. I just need to open a new account on it, but explaining this to a Telkom call center person is just not that easy. You don't maybe know of someone there that should be able to sort me out?

I could be wrong, but I don't think Telkom would allow reactivation as the account is in the owner's name and you might have to take it up with him. Good luck and hope you get it sorted :)

Great to hear you finally got the installation done AllBrain! I'm still trying to figure out how to configure the Siemens Gigaset SX762 so I can have an "always on" connection (I currently have to manually connect via Network Connections every morning) and activate wireless connectivity - someone suggested that I could connect my old DSL router to it, but I'm honestly clueless as to what I should do. Could someone please point me in the right direction? :(

Have to agree with you Kwandao. I could not even get mine reactivated. Had to start the whole application process from scratch. Things do go quicker if you mention you have the equipment already.

Depends on what DSL router it is Kwandao. If it has the built-in DSL modem them I would say no as your WAN/Internet port will be RJ11 where Wimax would require a RJ45 port. I recommend looking for a broadband router excluding the DSL modem.

I see... The router I have is a Linksys WRT54GL - if it won't work, could you recommend which one I should buy? A bit clueless here, sorry if I'm asking the obvious!

The Linksys WRT54GL does not come with a built-in DSL modem. It should have a RJ45 WAN/Internet port.

OK, they just phoned me ... technician is coming out tomorrow!
