Hi there

I am getting the free Telkom wireless modem (with usb cable and 4port ethernet).

I would like to connect two computers together, both accessing the internet.

Now,
1) What is the best way to connect the modem to the (main) computer: USB or ethernet.

2) With just the modem, and one USB wireless adaptor, would I be able to create not only access to internet for both computers, but also create a wireless LAN with file sharing etc. Or do I need other equipment for this?

Thanks
Ryan

The wireless modem should be alright for a LAN but i can't say for sure as ive never had one.

If all your PCs have ethernet cards use ethernet, otherwise usb to the one without. You use the Router Modem to set up the network. Wireless is good if PCs have wireless cards or adapters

Hi thanks for the feedback.
Do I need a wireless adapter for each computer, or will the wireless modem act as a wireless adaptor if I connect the modem to one computer by ethernet or usb?

Thanks

I intend to use wireless between the two computers, but cable between one of the computers and the wireless modem. So basically computer to cable to wireless modem to other computer. So I still need a wireless adapter for each computer then?

just the one which doesnt have the cable connected to it.

I brought a wireless pci card from accomp for R192...cheapest one Ive found so far...though they only 54mbit
If u can get cheap 108mbit cards(that works and not SMC), let me know :)

Hey, thanks for the help. I'll try set up the network when I get the modem. I think I'll get the USB adaptor so I can use the adapter elsewhere easily. Is there a performance difference between USB and PCI?

Also Is there a performance difference between using the USB cable between the PC and modem of the ethernet cable?

Thanks

Well there's been discussion about USB vs PCI and USB vs ethernet
Generally USB adapters dont have an external antenna, so unless u're pc is very close to the router, the signal might be slightly less compared to pci ones.
Though USB devices are more flexible, can be taken off and used on another device at anytime, due to this flexibility, more problem might occur, like the need to restart pc fo when the device hangs or something.

Well those are some of the problems Ive encountered over the year with USB, so unless u really need the flexibility, I tend to use the alternative option to USB.

But performancewise, its about the same. And if the router does not need external power if u use usb and u got a laptop, thats quite convenient for eskom powerless times :)
