TelkomInternet Communicator launched

Personally I hate skype.

Now Google Talk! theres a system. although I do miss the smilies :D

No ic, I just looked at the online help/support. :)

Was gonna download it to pull it apart, but then saw all the funny info they want and changed my mind.

I'm just excited too see a proudly south african product.

FUNGUN 007,

I admire your loyalty to Proudly South African, but your punt for a Telkom product, especially this piece of crap cannot go unanswered!

Telkom have tried their hardest to port shape and mess with any competitors VOIP products. They have released this product below the radar screen. Have you or anyone seen marketing for this? NO. This is because they don't really want people to use it, and not use their high priced PSTN. Normally when Telkom release a new product it is with much fanfare, but this was released very quietly.

There are so many people that will not use this on principle, even if their quality is a little better (THEY WILL NOT SHAPE THEIR OWN PRODUCT). The functionality of Skype or Gizmo will kill Telscum's product.

The sad thing is those poor souls who don't realize how badly Telkom has fcked this country will follow the rest of the sheep.

TelkomInternet Communicator

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but !!!
http://www.telkom.co.za/attheoffice/services/internetcommunicator/index.html

Isn't this just luvly - VOIP for use only between TelkomInternet customers - awesome. I guess that means this product's VOIP protocol ain't shapped.

Surely that's an anti-trust violation (terminology might not be correct there), since the other ISP's cannot offer such a service on shapped lines?

BUT WAIT, Telkom is indeed thinking about us, look how easy they make it:
(I mean really)

Q: What is MyCommunity?
A: You can create you own online community of TelkomInternet Communicator users with up to 5 members, who are not necessarily Telkom Internet customers. These "non-TelkomInternet" members will have to be registered for the service by you as the principal user*. Only valid TelkomInternet customers may be principal users.

Once your Community members are registered, they are also allocated CHAT numbers, which you must share with them as the principal user. These members will then be able to log in to the TelkomInternet Communicator service and download their own Communicator soft phones. By doing so, you have a now created a community of users and any member in your community may communicate with any other member, including yourself, no matter where in the world they are. All you need to do is dial the member's CHAT number from your communicator softphone.

Anyone knows which udp and tcp ports communicator use ? Want to set my skype to those.

You can configure skype to any ports you want. Gerry wants to use the same ports as Telkom's communicator. IF Telkom shapes on ports, it probably won't shape it's own apps. But theres nothing saying they won't shape their own apps ;)

You can always try to use port 80 (http) or port 443 (https) as those probably won't be shaped. But I have no idea what port shaping actually takes place.
Is there some way to test which ports are shaped?

It is also possible to shape the skype protocol itself, and then it won't matter which port you use.

Anyway, the default SIP port is 5060
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Initiation_Protocol
but then it uses RTP which isn't port specific:

Sorry, I misread Gerry's post. Gerry I had the same idea except not with Skype. That said, you also have to take into account the ports that the Skype servers listen to. I'm pretty sure none of them will be listening on standard ports such as 80 and 443 as suggested.
