TelkomInternet Communicator launched

LOL cant believe any1 actually trying the software and then again fungun_007 no offence but do u by any chance work for telkom ?

Telkom advertising

Have you guys noticed the discreet advertising used by Telkom for this new product of theirs? They sure learned quickly how to use Myadsl to their advantage, as well as the Cell phone companies.

hrm bandwidth cost.. i wonder if they made the quality of voice better vs compression OR worked out cost of normal call and then backwards to how much bandwidth minimum they should use. That way hard capping + per gig would make sense... anyone know if it takes more or less bandwidth than existing voip products?

I sometimes wonder whether Telkom introduces latency randomly, mainly to degrade the overseas VOIP calling experience (happened to me many times - and often during important calls...). Of course lag can be for any number of reasosn - but I ilike to think Telkom is screwing around somewhere... :)

Maybe now that Telkom has this VOIP app to support, they will have to make sure latency is more consistent?

here's the catch (as usual with telkom):
The product is available to all TelkomInternet subscribers. All you need to do is complete the registration process and download your free Telkom Internet Communicator softphone.
thanks but i'll stick to gizmo. i'm not buying a telkom isp account just to use this. what a sick way of conning unsuspecting future broadband users.

EDIT: it's pc to pc only, so what's the point when most instant messengers can do this anyway - and without needing a crappy telkominternet account,

I'm new to this whole VOIP thing. Are there any other alternatives to Skype and Telkom's offering that are worth the effort? I'm just excited too see a proudly south african product.

check in the VOIP section, there's a few SA offerings.
telkom's crap offering is not true VOIP for 2 reasons:
1) it's only available if you sign up an internet account with them
2) it only allows you to speak pc to pc - which most instant messengers do anyway. true VOIP solutions allow you to call normal landline or mobile telephones anywhere in the world (and for a fraction of the price that you would pay using normal telkom phones)

EDIT: if you do by any chance work for telkom, dare you try and shut down these people and then the proverbial **** will hit the proverbial fan ;)

seems like the insults are flying around.

kill a guy for giving his honest opinion. next you'll say i work for Robert Mugabe???

I agree, skype does have all in one package, specially with the skypeout. But don't we need to grow our local market (internet) to get cheaper bandwidth?

Yes, we are part of the global community, but we don't have presence that the world wants.

'telkom internet communicator' looks like the biggest dryest **** waste of time since Patricia Lewis thought having a ****** and some lumps of fat on her chest made her desirable - I wonder which stupid fat head bimbo's in Telkom thought this would be a great idea.
And I wonder who the co-opted slaves were who carefully stole design and programming elements from a million other 'internet phone' apps.
I wonder how many backdoors are built into the thing. Who feels like dissembling and reverse engineering it, to see what mayhem can be done to spoil and mess up Telkom's months of preplanning?
Let's start a rumour:
I feel its my duty to warn people about the viruses and spyware built into this application, which - in the wrong hands, can grab your personal info and bank details, and steal them. The only way to be safe, is to avoid downloading it.

lol sorry if i insulted you by saying that you might work for telkom :D that would be a bit harsh on anybody. check the VOIP section. http://www.phonehome.co.za and http://www.vipernetworks.co.za are both local, and offer reasonable rates. not as low as skypes skypeout, but close. get their softphone software, headphone, mic, buy as much credit as you need and voila. i used phonehome, loaded R80 airtime and got about 8 hours worth of international talktime to the main destinations.
personally i would support local efforts if the prices are off by a few cents.

Try Google Talk - although it doesn't have landline cababilities (yet) it has exelant quality - oh, and Google is better than Telkom!

Mmm - this looks exactly like something I saw yesterday (xnet? something like that). I'll post tomorrow on it.

I get the feeling Telkom wants to enable calling landlines with this proggy at some point. Can be interesting if it is not only Telkom that will allow its own ISP users to do this...

Haven't actually downloaded it (Skype makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside), but from the virtual tour, I get this idea.

This is just like fnb's ebucks, where you can only redeem your paper with
chosen merchants - ebucks it's not cash - paypal is.

TelkomInternet to TelkomInternet calls only - what a joke.

Everybody is going to want to call family, friends and business customers overseas
so TelkomInternet shuts out the biggest potential.

Effectively Telkom has declared Skype, DialPad and others legal, if they weren't already,
because we are allowed a choice of app and if Telkom discriminates against Skype or others -
they in for big siht with ICASA.

Is there a download link where I don't have to sign away my first born? I'll happily take a poke at the executable...

EBucks never claimed to be cash...it's a loyalty system.

Paypal isn't cash either, it's a payment mechanism.

Please don't lump these 2 great systems in the same boat at the telecommunications hell we call Telkom
