TelkomInternet`s new DSL capping policy

I posted my question to two threads as no one seems to be willing to give me a definite answer ... :D and I didn't want to make a whole new thread for such a simple question

I never meant your question... I meant the whole TelkomDSL uncapping thing!:D

If Telkom is infact pooling thier bandwidth, then it would be difficult to reach threshold...

The following figures are speculation and educated guesses:

TelkomSA has +/- 60000 subscribers (half of the ADSL subscriber base)
Each user is allocated 3GB
Thus the total pool is: 180,000 GB
Average usage is 1.4GB per user: 84,000 GB
Thus there is: 96,000 GB left in the pool to split between users that use more than 1.4GB.

The usage Threshold is the point at which Telkom can offer all it's users the remainder of their 3GB cap; it's a simple algorythm.

That would imply that averaging has nothing to do with capping. Capping simply takes place when the total bandwidth has been used.

For instance, what happens is a large number of users say 6000, download, say 17 GB? There will be a large number of 1.4 potential users who will be capped at 1.4 or below. I guess Telkom is applying the airline theory that one can overbook by 50% and hope like hell one gets 50% no show.

The other interesting comment on Telkomsa's site is :

Regrettably, high end usage will no longer be possible in this new model and hard caps have been imposed to maintain a suitable service for all concerned. High-end users will be capped once this pre defined threshold is reached, irrespective of average usage. A hard cap will terminate the service until the beginning of the new month.

Nowhere is the "pre defined threshold" defined. I guess it could be 3.001GB.

anyone used the telkominternet online account registration by the way? I am tempted to register one account to download some stuff ... is it complete registration? do I get username and password at the end (which I can use immediatelly) if I select billing through telkom invoice?

also where do I get the cancellation policies as I am not planing to keep the account for more than a month or two

I applied for a telkominternet account online. Fill in all your details and choose to be billed on your telkom invoice. I received my login details immediatly via email.

I am not sure about the cancelling part, but I have had a telkominternet account before and had no problems canceling that.

You are lucky. I had two accounts with them. A 3GB and a 2GB. I wanted to change to a 192 from a 384 and also cancel the 2GB account. I cancelled the 2GB account. That took about a week to process. Only then could I change the 384 to a 192. That change took about 3-4 weeks. While that was going on I decided to cancel my 3GB account and move to another ISP. I could not cancel because there was a transaction busy on the account and Telkom can only process one transaction at any time. It's absolutely crazy.

Cheers

Bekdik please tell me you don't honestly believe this?

The introduction of an average usage based option means that a hard usage cap will not be enforced on the basic services until such time as the average usage per subscriber per product set reaches the 2, 3 or 4 GB allocated limits. At this point all services exceeding the product capping limits will be capped.

Noones getting capped before 3gig, noone has been capped before 3 gig in the 2 months that Telkom has been implementing this scheme.

I understand that if this were true it would justify your "using more than your cap is stealing from your fellow users " theory, but its a complete fallacy. Your insistence on misinterpreting this statement is astoundingly irresponsible to me. You are propogating a lie that can only serve to scare users to using their connection as little as possible.

Um Carlhead pretty much spelled out what it must be in his last post. The predifined threshold can only be taken to mean no. of users x cap. What that would mean is that for 10 users on a 3 gig capped account the threshold would be 30 gigs. Once that 30 gigs is used by anyone in the group, Telkom says :"At this point all services exceeding the product capping limits(i.e 3 gigs) will be capped." it says nothing about capping the whole group ffs.

If it worked that way then everyone who was past their 3gigs allocation would be hardcapped on the exact same day. However we have people who are capped weeks apart so I have a feeling Telkom uses a different measure.

You've lost me. You say there are 10 users with 3GB each, giving a total available pool of 30GB bandwidth.

Carlhead, correctly, says:
The usage Threshold is the point at which Telkom can offer all it's users the remainder of their 3GB cap; it's a simple algorythm.

Which means that each of the 10 users must have 3GB each available.

Now if one user used 20GB, leaving only 10GB amongst the remaining 9 users, where does the extra 17GB come from?

Oh for gods sake from Telkom.

Edit :It really doesnt matter if theyre doing it the way they claim or if theyre just dishing out gigs like santa because theyve got a virtually limitless supply . The point is that theyre doing it because they can steal business away from the other ISPs by doing it. Theyre certainly not going to start capping anyone before their account cap because that way theyd lose a **** load more customers than they are stealing. Noone ever accused Telkom of being fccking stupid.

If they were doing it by contention group then no.

Telkom stupid? No. But have a close look at what they are saying about capping. They refer to two caps. one based on this average (which no one has yet explained) and the other for high end users:

my bolding.

Yeah well my point way back was that it doesnt matter what it is as long as i can do damn near 57gigs over my cap without affecting anyone elses 3 gig cap.

Whatever it actually is, its nothing like your guesses have been.

Im guessing youve got to a point now were youve realized its ok to go over your cap and are now trying to work out how much youre entitled to.

If you want to download loads of gigs, just go for it and be prepared to cough up for a second account if they cap your ass. Thats the price for highend usage these days.
