Subject: TelkomISP softcap?

Dear Royden Dall

I am an ADSL subscriber at TelkomISP. Will TelkomISP be capping local bandwidth after the 3GB cap is reached(soft-cap)?

Regards,

Jan Sarel Theron

>>>After sending this message to our "friend" Royden Dall I got the following reply...

Afternoon Jan Sarel

Let put it to you this way, we are developing processes that will have the least impact to the majority of our subscribers. As we run just less than 3 Gig on average across the base we will be stopping the high end users to assist the majority of our subscribers. So if you are one of those that run at the high end of the spectrum, you can expect your service to be interrupted, if this is not you, than carry on if nothing has happened.

I hope this helps to understand where we are right now. It is very much of a wait and see as we need to understand how many high end users we will pick up with the current usage model that could effect the average for the majority of the base. Everything works around the law of averages.

So for now we can afford to maintain a soft cap on all our products but it is not guaranteed at this stage.

Enjoy the service and let me know if I can help.

Warm regards
Royden Dall

what kind of bull**** is this?

Telkom ISP only softcap! Other SAIX isp hardcap!

-=[ CPU Clock Speed: 2010 MHz ]=-
-=[ Operating System: WinXP ProSP2 Windows Uptime: 1 hour 3 min 39 sec
-=[ Downloads { Total: 3.18 GB Current: 13.81 MB Running: 2 Ave Speed: 5.56 kB/s }
-=[ Uploads { Total: 11.68 GB Current: 113.62 MB Running: 2 Ave Speed: 49.26 kB/s }

According to hellkom.co.za their test 3gig telkom internet account was only soft capped

This response means that alot of Telkom Internet cutomers are upset with the new harcap and Telkom Internet have done something about it.

I just want to know how much exactly this new bandwidth cut off point is that classifies you as an abuser.

"Kind Regards

MWEB Operations

Please note: Telkom limits the amount of data you can send and receive in a specific month according to your chosen cap. If you exceed your cap, Telkom will stop your ADSL access completely for the rest of that month. Telkom's capping policy applies to all ADSL users in South Africa, regardless of their Internet Service Provider."

Maybe Mr Dall needs to read this quote from an MWEB ADSL Usage Report

So what this really means is that not even Telkom Internet know what the #### is going on.

we are developing processes

It is very much of a wait and see

What the hell kind of language is that? You're a part of Telkom and you have to "wait and see"??? You're at the front line of this change and not one of your superiors has so much as bothered to send you a memo?

>>>>>So what does this mean???

It means that you should forward this guy's mail to every Telkom shareholder you know, telling them to sell ASAP, because if this is the way Telkom is run, come next year they are dead in the water.

I spoke to a lady at SAIX the other day, she claims that all users of ADSL will be hardcapped after their cap is reached, TelkomISP or not. I'm still going on international torrents, done 34.89Gb already.

Telkom Internet cannot change any pricing. They have to submit any pricing changes to ICASA.

LOL, as someone else on this forum said recently, if you give a person a car that can do 100Km/h, but it will explode if you exceed 60Km/h, you wont find to many people doing 100 now will you dumbass.

Its not word for word but close and I cant remember who said it or where, but it is very fitting.

Of course most of your frikkin users use less than 3 gigs Royden, cause if they use more they get crucified financially or just plain cut-off.

eish

As we run just less than 3 Gig on average across the base

But according to Steve White, the vast majority of users never hit their cap. Now suddenly its just the average user that runs just less than the cap?

Do the maths... An "Average" of just less than 3 gig suggests that for every user who is under cap, there's one who goes over. If as Sneeky says, people are deliberately holding back, that means that all the Telkom propoganda about how people are happy with 3 gigs really is BS.

We have the proof right here :)

Thanks Royden

The stats are all there to serve THEIR purpose.

Another way of looking at it post 1 Nov,,,
I used to have a 30 gig account. On a rough average I did around say 7-20 gigs per month whilst I had the means to. The last month of the 30 giggers I only did like 7 or 8 gigs for the month.

Now though, no more 30 gig accounts, I will also be under 3 gigs a month on a std account, I might have more than 1 account though, none of this is taken into consideration.

So in theory I am also an 'under 3 gig a month user', according to the Telkom way of working out stats, which I am definately NOT.

Good points.

How the hell can they justify these low caps by saying "on average" most people are not bypassing the allocated cap, when doing so would actually result in Telkom labelling these people "abusers" and cutting them off the Internet??? This is SUCH an illogical statement!!! People will obvously not use more than the specified CAP because they are capped!!!

I want to know from Telkom what is the definition of "Abuser" .... If I buy 100 Gig, am I an abuser 'cos I use ALL my gigs in a month ?

If you use anything other than Http, Smtp and Pop you are an abuser.
Just remember to keep Smtp down to less then 12 messages per hour or you are also a spammer.
