Telkoms false advertising

Hey all...

I've been reading with interest the thoughts of the Myadsl forums users about what they actually do with their connection(s)

I personally use it for uploading images to my website (a rather hefty amount of images), gaming and downloading music...

It seems, as far as telkom are concerned two of the above activites consitute abuse :P You know, the old story that gaming and P2P stuff is abuse..

Now heres the thing.. Recently in both SL and Femina there have been telkom adverts extolling the joys of both downloading movies, music and gaming online.. Does this smack of hypocrasy or what? Advertise the ability to DL movies/music and game online and yet, classify such activities as *abuse*

In an interesting side note. The place I work at reached their cap last month about a week before the end of the month. When asked to see why (the owners of the business are clueless about internet related things) I poked around and found emule and bittorrent running on two machines... This invoked the whole 'people are abusing the intenet' discussion.

My thoughts are this. If there was no cap in place, DL three seasons of comedy shows wouldn't be classed *abuse* as it wouldn't affect the business' connectivity (obivously bandwith etc..but the line would be available all the month)

It's a sort of catch 22. It's *abuse* BECAUSE of the cap, but the cap is in place to stop abuse. Ergo. Remove the cap, remove the so called abuse...

ive download nearly 150 gigs of info in 5 months so yes you can do all that if you dont have a 3 gig cap

also ppl should not use work to use p2p
if you want to use p2p or download anything other than email get homedsl
 
150 gigs in 5 months. I really fail to see how you managed to download 150 gigs of legal stuff in 5 months. Downloading the entire Ubuntu repo over and over again?

Firstly what does it matter if it is legal or not, the nature of the content is irrelevant.

Secondly, to assume people are doing illegal things simply because you cannot comprehend what the legitimate content might be is not really a very flattering thing to announce.

Finally to ease your mind, consider for a moment that most Linux mags these days come with DVDs, often more than one of new content every month. There are quite a number of such mags, yet each manages to have fairly different content. If there are only 4 such mags each month that’s already 16Gig of stuff you could have downloaded. And that’s just Linux stuff, most people will be interested in more than just Linux.

Or, let’s say I like to listen to a streaming radio station a lot, so I listen every day, the whole day. In one month I could rack up 41Gig just on a 128Kbit internet radio station!

There is a complaint open with ASASA re the false advertising - but we need the proof
 
poolfuzz : Of course it matters whether it is legal or not. One is legal the other is not, and is abuse of the network, which causes the rest of us to suffer.

Your Linux dvd's comment is logically wrong, which I don't feel like getting into, but you do raise a good point about the internet radio.

I do still however feel the the *majority* of people who download such large quantities are using it for illegal purposes

Sorry, it wasn't so much a thread about Telkom being flase and misleading in their advertising, more a thread about how it's amusing that they advertise all these fun things you can do with ADSL and the reality is somewhat different..

Granted you can get 30gig accounts etc.., but for the average joe in the street, doing the 'fun' things on the net will be severly restricted if you arn't familiar with proxy servers and port settings et al...

As far as proof goes, i'll scan in the Femina ad tomorrow and post it here.. Not that it's definitive, but I suppose every little helps (to quote Tescos :) )
 
Whether they are downloading illegal content or not is irrelevant to discussion of bandwidth. There are many legitimate reasons to download 30Gb in a month - A graphic design company with global branches that needs to move hi-res images and movies. What if I want to stream family movies to my family in Aus?

Which is worse 1Gb of illegal movie or 200kb of Kiddi porn? Are you going to block access to all *.jpg's just because some jpgs are horrible? No. Our constitution even says no.
 
can someone plz answer my question!!! is there any difference between home and business dsl 512 when it comes to shaping, contention ratio etc!!! PLZ ANSWER!! :)
 
Movies On Demand from the states ... hire a movie for U$4 per movie .... Even on a 1mbs line it's not really working, but it would constitute 'legal' downloads, and much more then the 30GB
 
Last time that I checked Telkom wasn't part of the SAPS. It's got bugger all to do with them what is or isn't downloaded. They should give you a line and it's up to you what you use it for.

Imagine if the hardware stores took the same approach? You go in and buy an axe or a chainsaw and then for the next 50 years you have one of thier employees following you around incase you use it to mame or kill someone?? Absolute stupidity.

Telkom is a line provider, they should get off their high horse and start providing lines, there's thousands of South Africans that need them and only 0.1% of the population use ADSL. Just shows what kind of idiots they are.

Proof? You only need to open FHM, Popular Mechanics, GQ, SL, the list goes on. There was some discussion about the one in FHM a while back - Antowan posted some scans if you havent seen them - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=279508&postcount=19

Since Telkom actively advertises ADSL as being FOR downloading movies and playing games (amongst things) participating in such activities can no longer be construed as abuse.

Yes - i'm fully aware of all the print material and tv ads that are around! The problem is that telkom's ad agency claims that the so called "abuse policy" doesn't exist.... thats what we need evidence of - my complaint is on ASASA's back burner until i can furnish details of the abuse policy that telkom subjects us to (that is in contradiction of the ads)

Was wondering, does Telscum advertise in squatter camps or poor areas?
 
Doesn't the simple fact that Telkom shape your traffic, and limit certain ports, hint that they have a policy against gaming? If they have no such policy, then why the port shaping?
